Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Symister.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From the age of 11, I’ve always had a passion for braiding. It started with my braiding my dolls hair and eventually moved to family members. Before I knew it I was the neighborhood braider at the age of 13.
My life drastically changed at 16 because I moved from the Bronx, New York to Houston, Texas. There was a vast difference in the culture and it seemed as if I had put braiding down for good.
I graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a bachelor of science in food and nutrition. Soon after I started to work in my field of study. It was only after longing for more career wise, that my sister-in-law and I decided to focus on our passion for braiding. We stepped out on faith and opened our very own braiding shop in 2017 which now has become a Houston favorite, L&E Braiding. I must say this has been the best move for my career both financially and personally. Being able to do what you love and make a living is a great feeling.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Entrepreneurship is never easy. Some of the struggles I had early on was building a solid clientele. Because I was new to the market I would go days without any clients. Instead of quitting I used that time to network and even take braiding classes to perfect my craft.
As you know, we’re big fans of L&E Braiding. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in growing healthy hair through protective styles (braids). I offer the most popular braid styles: Knotless Braids and distressed soft locs. What sets me apart is that I provide the hair for all my services. I want booking with me to be quick and easy for all my clients. Our Motto at L&E Braiding is “We care about your edges”. So you don’t have to worry about any hair loss or painful braids with us.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I always had a mindset to make my own money. I started babysitting and braiding hair for money as a teenager. I would save my money to buy my own school clothes. I was very outgoing so I became a cheerleader in middle through high school. I have 3 siblings so I enjoyed being around family and friends.
