Hidden Gems: Meet Gabrielle Ohaya of GiftofGabz Event Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Ohaya.

Gabrielle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the oldest daughter of four born to immigrant parents from Nigeria. My entire childhood revolved around taking care of my younger siblings. Although the burden was heavy, I always enjoyed cooking for my siblings and eventually our friends. To this day, they are my biggest supporters and fans. I thoroughly enjoy the art of cooking and especially enjoy what it does for people who come together to share their love. Because of this, my future goals for my cooking go beyond just having a restaurant or food truck, I want those around me to directly share in any success I achieve. I’ve primarily worked as a teacher in my career but have always held a position in the hospitality industry (restaurants, event centers, and hotels) on the side. Along the way, I have met some amazingly talented people who are often not aware of how impressive their abilities are. That’s why I’m trying to build something where there is always space for collaboration and access to opportunities that myself and people in my circle are often not able to reach because of our marginalized identities. I truly believe in the idea that if you are not offered a seat at the table, you might as well make your own table. It has been the driving force behind everything I do.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Building awareness about my business is a huge obstacle because I’ve primarily relied on word of mouth and doing pop-up events. Building a stronger social media presence would help dramatically but I struggle with having the time and ability to commit to executing that well and consistently all by myself.

We’ve been impressed with GiftofGabz Event Services LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Currently functioning as a Nigerian fusion catering business, GiftofGabz Event Services is meant to be a hub for talented people in my circle to collaborate. I currently provide high-quality, traditional Nigerian cuisines to my customers as well as authentic soul food with a focus on its historical connection to the African Diaspora. Additionally, I partner with talented people to provide a complete experience. My goal is to be able to be a multi-level culture-focused service for events from weddings to small gatherings and open to all those who embrace the unique flair Nigerian culture adds. The goal is for GiftofGabz to be a one-stop shop for all event needs from catering to event planning to decorations and customized gifts with a background focus on Nigerian culture. This added element will be able to bring an elegant and formal touch to the way African events are hosted.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My baby sister and my close friends have been my biggest cheerleaders and supporters. They have believed in me and pushed me to keep going since the beginning. I’m forever grateful for their support and love them deeply.
