Hidden Gems: Meet Gregory Hardmon of Doran & Cawthorne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Hardmon.

Hi Gregory, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from Dillard University with a B.A. in Mass Communications in 2003. Following graduation, I returned to my hometown and taught for a few years in the Dallas Independent School District. I then decided to apply to Thurgood Marshall School of Law and graduated from there in 2010. I received my law license in November of 2010. After working as a contract attorney for a couple of years, I returned to my alma mater in 2012 and worked on the faculty as an instructor for the bar essay review course, where I assisted students with preparing for the bar exam.

After leaving academia in 2015, I became to work on my own in the areas of criminal defense and personal injury. In 2019 I was offered a position and decided to join the law firm of Doran & Cawthorne, PLLC as Of Counsel, helping to establish its first office in the state of Texas. I have represented clients at the federal and state level with much success. I am licensed with the State Bar of Texas, admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, and an active member of the Texas State Bar College and the National Bar Association.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth. During my first year of law school, the country endured the 2008 recession making it very difficult to secure summer employment as a law clerk. Thankfully I secured a position with TMSL’s Earl Carl Institute for Social and Legal Policy. Additionally, just trying to adjust to the rigors of the law school curriculum with also trying to work part-time to make ends meet was a challenge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The law firm is based in Opelousas, Louisiana with offices in Lafayette and Baton Rouge. The Houston office is the firm’s first expansion into the state of Texas. I work with attorneys Jonathan Frank and Paul DeRousselle II, along with our great support staff, law clerk and student intern. Our main areas of practice are personal injury and criminal defense, and we abide by the motto of “Real Talk and Real Results” when it comes to working on behalf of our clients. We’re a full-service boutique firm that is not afraid to go to battle with large firms and major corporations.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
What may be surprising is that my legal career in some ways, has come full circle. I have former students from my law school academia days that are now presiding judges and I have the opportunity to go before on cases. Of course, those individuals maintain the upmost ethical standards and do not give me any favors but it just makes me proud to see that the work that I put in during those years were appreciated and in a small way, assisted them along their journey.
