Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalia Henry.
Jalia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From an early age, I knew that I wanted to work in the mental health field. Growing up, mental health was not something that was talked about in my community and I witnessed so many of my peers struggle through things like anxiety and depression and yet nobody took it seriously. My mission as a clinician is to provide affordable and accessible care to the African American community while providing education and working towards ending the stigma surrounding mental health. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies from The University of Houston and my Master’s degree in Family Therapy from The University of Houston-Clearlake. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate and trained in various Evidence Based Practices mostly focused on trauma informed care and targeting things like PTSD, insomnia, depression and anxiety.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the ongoing journeys of being a clinician is doing the work yourself. I would be a hypocrite advocating for mental health and therapy and not acknowledging those needs for myself. I ensured that throughout my graduate school journey that I maintained therapy sessions not only to process my life but also to help me be better prepared to be the best clinician that I can be for others in the future.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about therapywithjalia?
One of the main things I hear is that it is difficult to find a therapist that they can afford. Since my work is fully virtual I have the ability to have lower session fees which makes therapy more fiscally accessible. All of the choices that I make are with my clients in mind, from the rates of sessions, frequency of meeting, to the amount of clients that I maintain on my caseload are all decisions that are made with my clients’ overall success in mind.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
