Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Marinick.
Hi Joseph, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Lamp Project began in 2025 when I started visiting a local park to share the Gospel, provide breakfast, and build relationships with individuals experiencing homelessness. As those relationships grew, I realized that many people wanted to move forward but lacked someone to help them navigate the many barriers standing in their way.
One of the first individuals we helped obtained identification, a phone, groceries, rental assistance, and employment. Today, he is working full-time as a truck driver. We also helped a 77-year-old veteran transition into a personal care home, where he continues to receive ongoing support.
These experiences revealed an important gap: while many organizations provide valuable services, too many people still fall through the cracks because there is no consistent continuity of care. What began as providing food, water, and hygiene kits has grown into a relationship-based model that combines motivational interviewing, individualized case management, and coordinated resource navigation. We believe lasting change happens when practical assistance is paired with consistent follow-through.
Our vision is to continue expanding partnerships, increase access to housing and supportive services, and ensure that no one has to navigate the journey out of homelessness alone.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has not been an easy road. As a young nonprofit, one of our greatest challenges has been learning how to build a sustainable organization while continuing to meet the growing needs of the community. We have invested significant time in understanding available resources, developing partnerships with healthcare providers, the Houston Police Department, recovery programs, and other community organizations, and learning how to navigate complex systems to better serve those we support.
Another ongoing challenge is securing sustainable funding. As a nonprofit less than two years old, many grant opportunities require multiple years of financial audits, making us ineligible despite the growing need for our services. Like many small nonprofits, we also work continually to build donor relationships and long-term financial support.
The individuals we serve often face multiple barriers and are in different stages of change—from precontemplation to action and, at times, relapse. Walking alongside them requires patience, consistency, and long-term commitment.
While the road has been challenging, these experiences have strengthened our organization. Despite being a young nonprofit, we have already made a meaningful impact in Houston, and we remain committed to expanding our reach, strengthening partnerships, and helping more individuals move toward lasting stability.
We’ve been impressed with The Lamp Project, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Lamp Project is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving individuals experiencing homelessness and families facing hardship throughout the Houston area. Our mission is to help people move from crisis to stability through relationship-based, individualized support.
Rather than offering one-time assistance alone, we meet people where they are, identify the barriers contributing to their instability, and develop a personalized, step-by-step plan tailored to their unique circumstances. We then walk alongside them throughout that journey, connecting them with community resources while providing consistent encouragement, accountability, and follow-through.
A key part of our approach is Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based communication method that helps individuals identify their own motivations, strengths, and goals. We believe lasting change is most sustainable when people are empowered to make their own decisions rather than simply being told what to do. This approach helps build trust, increase self-efficacy, and ultimately promote greater self-sufficiency.
What sets The Lamp Project apart is our continuity-of-care model. While we provide essential resources such as food, hygiene supplies, identification assistance, transportation, housing navigation, healthcare connections, employment support, and benefits enrollment, our focus extends beyond meeting immediate needs. Our theory of change is that long-term stability is achieved by combining practical assistance with consistent relationships, coordinated care, and ongoing support that addresses the underlying barriers keeping people in crisis.
We are most proud of the relationships we build and the lives we see transformed. Our goal is not simply to serve people for a day, but to equip them with the tools, confidence, and support needed to build lasting independence and hope.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to us is restoring hope. We believe that lasting change begins when people know they are seen, valued, and capable of moving forward. Many of the individuals we serve have experienced years of trauma, broken trust, and repeated setbacks. By being present, patient, consistent, and reliable, we help rebuild confidence and empower individuals to take ownership of their next steps.
Our goal is to increase self-efficacy by helping people recognize their own strengths, overcome barriers, and develop the skills and confidence needed to achieve lasting stability. We believe real transformation happens when practical support is combined with genuine relationships, accountability, and hope.
As a Christian nonprofit, our faith inspires everything we do. We strive to reflect the love and compassion of Christ in the way we serve others, recognizing that every person has inherent dignity, value, and the potential for redemption. Whether someone is seeking housing, employment, healthcare, or simply someone who will walk alongside them, we want them to know they are not alone and that hope is always possible.
