Hidden Gems: Meet Joseph Perlman of Texas Institute For Anti Aging Research

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Perlman.

Hi Joseph, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been in private practice as a board certified plastic surgeon since 1984. My practice for the last 20 years has solely been cosmetic surgery. While treating my patients I became interested in bioidentical hormone therapy and anti-aging. My wife,Jeannie, and I have been taking bioidentical hormones since 2012 and peptide therapy for the last 6 years. I have found that offering anti-aging evaluation and treatment programs to my patients has been a tremendous benefit for them, and that is why we started the Texas Institute For Anti Aging Research(TIFAAR).Over the last 3 years we’ve also looked into stem cell therapy. This has brought a significant change in the lives of many of our patients.
As a member of the American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine(A4M), I have met leaders in the field personally and while attending both the national meetings and meetings in Europe and Asia. The field of anti-aging medicine and longevity is expanding and we feel that we are on the forefront of technology.
Our practice is also involved in an FDA study to improve the lives of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. we are 1 of 140 doctors nationwide testing a monoclonal antibody that slow goes down and in some cases reverses the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Initially part of the struggle was when we began evaluating our patients for Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. many of their primary care doctors and gynecologists felt that hormone replacement therapy was either unnecessary or dangerous. this was probably based on concerns about the old PremPro synthetic replacement therapy which had some serious side effects. In addition some of the patients were were told that they were too old for hormone replacement therapy once they reached menopause.
The other major obstacle is the fact that, despite decades of research and use in other countries worldwide, most peptide therapy and stem cell therapy are not FDA approved in this country. we may patients aware that our tides and stem cell products come from FDA approved labs. The peptides are certified 99% pure and the stem cells are are harvested from girls aged ages 18 to 25 who have undergone extensive testing including various viruses. the stem cells are harvested at the time of cesarean section and are then frozen until they are ready for us to use them.
During our research into anti-aging it has also been a challenge trying to convince fellow members of the medical community how important it is to reduce inflammation in our patients bodies and allow their immune systems to do the repair work,

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Texas Institute For Anti Aging Research?
TIFAAR,as we call our medical practice, is an offshoot of my cosmetic surgery practice. It is gaining recognition both locally and nationally for our ability to help our patients live longer and healthier. We offer a more personalized concierge approach. We limit the number of patients we see ,so that we can spend more time getting to know them, finding out what their needs are, and determining the best way to help them live healthier. The buzzword in anti-aging now is “inflammaging”, meaning that the main cause of aging is how our bodies are exposed to many stresses. Only about 25% of our aging is due to our genetics, which we can’t change. The other 75% is due to epigenetics,These are environmental factors that we can change such as getting proper sleep, eating a proper diet, getting adequate exercise, making sure that our hormones are at the proper levels, and techniques to lower the stress that we face every day. I believe the way we treat our patients is what I am most proud of. Most of our patients are referrals from other patients.
We want our patients to know that we spend countless hours learning the latest developments in anti-aging, what we works and what doesn’t work, and most of all, what is safe and effective for them individually.

Any big plans?
The plans for the future include increasing our presence on social media. This so that we can help patients know
more about how to live longer and healthier. We are in discussions with a local TV network about the possibility of having a regular appearance on one of their morning shows.

From a personal standpoint,Jeannie and I have always loved to travel and we are looking forward to fulfill some of our ” dream trips”.My mother’s family is from Italy and we visit my relatives regularly.

I was a physician for the U.S. Olympic team in 1988 and still keep ties with many of my friends. We plan to go to the next Olympics in Los Angeles, Jeannie’s hometown
