Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Urrutia.
Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Laura Urrutia, I am the person behind Tacos Toreados. The food industry has always been in my life, my parents always dreamed about having their own food business. So when I turned 14, I started helping them at their taco stand (Taqueria El Regio). I learned many things there regarding Mexican food. Although when I graduated, I took a different route in my life.
I worked in the medical field for many years until 2021 when my youngest daughter was born, and I decided to stay at home and take care of her. So after many years of talking about starting a small business, I’ve decided to take a chance and do something I’ve always loved and grown up with. My husband Jose Juan Herrera and I decided to start our own small business “Tacos Toreados” a taco catering service. Instead of having our customers come to us, we go to them.
The whole idea of partnering with someone came during a casual family gathering with my aunt, who is now my business partner Olga Ortiz. We work together to provide the best service at our customers’ events. When we started, we decided both of us were going to serve together, but since we had such a great answer from our clients. We are now serving at different events, with the help of our husbands.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe there are no small businesses without any struggles. It’s hard for people to know or trust your business, social media helps a lot but sometimes is not enough. One of our major struggles with Tacos Toreados is that some customers will like to taste our food before booking with us which is totally understandable but since we are a small business we don’t have a place yet where they can come and enjoy our food.
As a mom of two children sometimes it can get hard along the way with trying to balance life and Tacos Toreados. We usually serve our clients on the weekends so many things we do as a family now are moved during the week, but we put a lot of work and love into Tacos Toreados that we are happy to make changes along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tacos Toreados?
Tacos Toreados is a taco catering service in Houston and surrounding areas. We provide food for our customers during their special events. We serve any type of event and there is no big event for us. We provide fresh Mexican food for our clients and their guests. We make their tacos the moment they order them, with fresh toppings from guests to choose from.
Planning an event can be stressful, but our job will make it easier. We are here to help and provide the best service. I believe we are different from other taco catering services because we prepared everything fresh with care and love, always making sure our clients’ guests received delicious food.
We all have a different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is a very strong word, it’s something that we all look for. Everyone wants to be successful; this brings joy and pride to anyone.
The problem is getting there, but I believe working hard leads to success. Our dream one day is to have a Tacos Toreados restaurant that’s the definition of success for us, but it doesn’t stop there. You have to work hard each and every day to keep a business successful.
