Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Staner.
Hi Leslie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Beauty has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. My grandmother, who I am very close to, is and always has been a beauty queen. She was the first person to introduce me to beauty and fashion. That love grew even deeper when I was 9 years old and my dad remarried a business owner and hair stylist. After this, I spent weekends and summers at her beauty salon just taking it all in and enjoying being in the environment.
When I was about 13 years old, my step mom took notice to my interest in makeup and awarded me with my very own eyeshadows, a Bella Terra eyeshadow tower with the warm-neutrals color scheme. She taught me the basics of where to place eyeshadow on the lid and I took that little bit of information and ran with it. I was only 14 years old when I started being asked to do other people’s makeup, and was glad to do so. This passion developed through my high school years as I continued to teach myself and by the time I graduated high school I had a fully stocked, professional grade makeup collection. I knew I wanted to serve the beauty industry so I went straight into the Esthetician program at San Jacinto North Campus in Houston where I was on the Dean’s List and graduated in 2015.
I became a freelance makeup artist soon after and also worked as an Esthetician at a Luxury Medspa. I faced severe acne for the next few years so by 2017, my career became skincare focused in order to heal my skin and be able to help others in the future. I accomplished exactly that and by 2020, my spirit was longing the creativity of doing makeup again. I’m a believer that we should always follow our hearts and not let fear or apprehension get in the way. Although the circumstances were untimely considering the pandemic that was going on, I decided to introduce Sheer Goddess Beauty to the public through Instagram. I figured that even though no events were going on, I could still share my artwork with others to inspire and begin building relationships with my future clientele. My faith paid off because as of 2021, Sheer Goddess Beauty has experienced overwhelming support and appreciation from the community it serves and continues to flourish ahead in the current year of 2022.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the biggest struggles have been learning patience, killing the ego, and standing by my vision even when others may not see it yet. I’ve had to learn patience with myself as I make mistakes and spend time on learning how to run a business successfully. When starting out, it can be difficult doing every single job in the business yourself, and there is a learning process in order to fulfill the duties at hand. Killing the ego has been vital to every step in this journey, for this I offer a quote: “It is impossible to learn that which one thinks one already knows,” – Epictetus (Philosopher). It has been a humbling experience to get comfortable with not being the best in the beginning and learning how to coach myself through that in order to become the best one day. Lastly, I have had to stand by my vision through low points and facing criticism from loved ones. Although my family has shown support when it really matters, the day to day support was absent for a good while. I am the first person in my family to take on an entrepreneurial career path and understandably, my family has had concerns. They believe having a consistent paycheck with benefits is the safest way to live and have had a difficult time understanding why I would want to take on the risky life of an entrepreneur. For this reason, I’ve had to stand by my vision whether everyone supports me or even if no one at all supports me. Each of these struggles have served me in a positive way and have trained me up for the struggles that lie ahead.
