Hidden Gems: Meet Lisa Bub of A La Carte Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Bub.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
A La Carte Nutrition started because I saw a gap that nobody seemed to be addressing. There were plenty of meal prep companies offering pre-packaged meals, but very few were truly personalized. Most people were trying to fit themselves into a generic menu instead of having meals built around their real lives, health goals, and preferences. I also noticed that many meal prep options operated more like packaged food businesses than actual kitchens, with meals designed to sit on shelves for long periods, often loaded with sodium or preservatives and lacking freshness.

I wanted to build something very different. At A La Carte Nutrition, meals are cooked fresh and delivered shortly after they’re prepared. We focus on real ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and menus that evolve based on what our clients actually want and need. The goal has always been to create something that feels closer to having a personal chef than ordering from a standard meal delivery service.

My background in business, culinary training, and a nutrition-forward approach shaped that philosophy into what it is today. Nutrition absolutely matters, but so do flavor, texture, and the experience of eating. If food doesn’t taste good, people won’t stick with it long term. Living and building this business in Houston also set the bar high — this is one of the best food cities in the US, and healthy meals should still feel exciting and satisfying.

In the early days, I partnered with a few local F45 gyms and worked closely with members during their challenge programs. That experience was eye-opening. People didn’t just need “healthy food”; they needed guidance, flexibility, and meals they could realistically enjoy week after week. What started with a handful of clients quickly grew through word of mouth as people realized they could have food that supported their goals without feeling restrictive or mass-produced.

Today A La Carte Nutrition serves busy families, executives, athletes, and individuals navigating specific health needs across the Houston area. We’ve grown into a structured, multi-tiered operation with an incredible team of amazing chefs, delivery drivers and a Registered Dietitian, but the mission hasn’t changed. We’re here to simplify nutrition, remove stress around food, and make meals people genuinely look forward to. Ultimately, food has always been how I take care of people, and building this company allowed me to turn that instinct into something that now supports an entire community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road — and I think that’s true for most businesses that grow with intention.

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to scale without losing the personalization that made the company successful in the first place. In the beginning, I was involved in every client interaction, every menu, and every detail. As demand increased, I had to learn how to build systems, delegate effectively, and trust a team to uphold the same standards.

That transition required letting go of control in some areas while strengthening structure in others, which is challenging for me.

The food industry also comes with constant challenges — fluctuating food costs, staffing reliability, evolving dietary trends, and the complexity of accommodating both macro-based and medically specific nutrition needs. One client might be an athlete tracking precise macros, while another might be managing autoimmune issues or working through a new health diagnosis.

Those challenges pushed us to become more organized, more intentional, and more committed to the experience we provide. Over time we’ve built systems that allow us to grow while still delivering a personalized level of care.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
A La Carte Nutrition is a personalized meal prep and private chef service designed to combine culinary quality with real nutritional strategy. Everything we do is built around the individual client rather than a one-size-fits-all menu.

Over the years we’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide range of people — including local politicians, doctors, and professional athletes within the Houston Texans organization, rising stars like Damien Pierce and Thomas Gordon, and even former NFL linebacker Darryl Sharpton. At the same time, we have clients who are busy Houston individuals and families, professionals with demanding schedules, high school athletes, and people navigating specific health challenges who simply want to eat better without adding more stress to their week.

What they all have in common is that they want food they can trust. They want meals that support their goals, simplify their lives, and still taste really good.

What sets us apart is the level of customization we offer. Our services range from private in-home chefs to semi-private chef services through our commercial kitchen, individual and family-style meals, macro-based meal planning, and medically tailored nutrition supported by our Registered Dietitian. We’re especially known for being able to accommodate complex dietary needs while keeping meals practical, approachable, and enjoyable.

One of the things I love most about building A La Carte Nutrition in Houston is the community itself. This city is full of hardworking people balancing careers, kids’ sports schedules, businesses, commutes, and health goals all at the same time. Food often becomes the thing that either adds stress or brings everyone back together. Being able to step in and make that part of life easier for families, athletes, and professionals in our own city has been incredibly meaningful for our entire team.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built and the people behind the company. Our chefs care deeply about the food they prepare, and our clients trust us with their health, their families, and their routines. That’s something we never take lightly.

We’ve grown intentionally without sacrificing personalization, and that balance continues to define who we are.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to get started with A La Carte Nutrition is by reaching out to hello@alacartenutrition.com and we can send you our client questionnaire so we can understand your goals, lifestyle, and dietary needs. From there we will schedule a consultation and recommend the service that fits best — whether that’s private in-home chef services, semi-private chef support, standard meal prep meals, macro-based plans, or medically tailored meals.

We also love collaborating with wellness professionals, physicians, trainers, and corporate partners who want to provide elevated nutrition support to their clients or teams. Some of our most meaningful growth has come from those relationships.

And honestly, referrals and word of mouth have always been the biggest driver of our business. When someone shares our services with a friend, coach, or family member who could benefit from personalized nutrition, it means a lot.

People can also follow along with us on Instagram and Facebook @alacartenutriton where we share meals, behind-the-scenes moments from our kitchen, and highlights from the A La Carte Nutrition community.
