Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Garza.
Hi Luis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, a border town that shaped my early interests and ultimately inspired my passion for criminal law. What began as childhood curiosity—watching crime investigation shows like CSI and playing cops and robbers—gradually evolved into a genuine and enduring interest in criminal law. Then, in high school, I further explored this interest by enrolling in criminal justice courses and participating in competitions that focused on attorney skills. Through these experiences, I quickly realized that a career in criminal law was the path I wanted to pursue.
I attended the University of Texas at Brownsville, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. During my undergraduate studies, I gained hands-on experience in several criminal justice–related roles, including positions at the Juvenile Detention Center and with the Cameron County Auto Theft Division. Although my long-term goal remained to become an attorney, these experiences fostered a strong interest in law enforcement. I completed multiple internships and developed a deep appreciation for police work. This led me to enrolling in the police academy and beginning my career as a Texas Peace Officer.
In 2016, I made the deliberate decision to pursue my lifelong goal of becoming an attorney, transitioning from law enforcement and relocating to Houston, Texas to attend law school. I earned my Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center in 2019. After graduation, I worked alongside a nationally recognized criminal defense attorney, where I learned the importance of zealous advocacy and high-caliber legal representation. This experience motivated me to establish my own professional identity within the legal field.
In 2021, I joined the Harris County Public Defender’s Office as an Assistant Public Defender. I was fortunate to receive exemplary training from seasoned defense attorneys and to further develop my trial skills by attending and graduating from the prestigious Trial Lawyers College. After three rewarding years of public service, I made the decision to take the next step in my career by founding my own law firm.
In 2024, I established L. Garza Law Firm with the goal of providing a client-centered approach to legal representation, emphasizing personalized advocacy and a deep commitment to understanding each client’s unique circumstances.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that challenges are an inevitable part of life, regardless of the path one chooses to pursue. One of the most significant challenges I faced was relocating to a new city to attend law school. Having grown up in a close-knit family, the transition away from my support system was particularly difficult.
Even today, balancing work and family life remains a challenge. The demands of practicing law often require long hours, and I sometimes find it difficult to disconnect from work at home, as I feel a strong obligation to be available to my clients after hours.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

How do you think about luck?
I believe that luck has played a significant role in shaping my professional journey and personal development. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough to come across many mentors and colleagues whose guidance has had a meaningful impact on my path. Without their support, my career may have taken a different course.
At the same time, bad luck has caused periods of hardship and unexpected setbacks in my career. These experiences required me to pause, reassess my decisions, and make necessary adjustments. While these experiences initially appeared as a misfortune, they ultimately became a catalyst for growth and redirection. In hindsight, I recognize that without these setbacks, I may not have been able to achieve my professional goals.
