Today we’d like to introduce you to Mahmood Haque.
Hi Mahmood, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Mahmood Haque. I own a boutique personal injury law firm in Houston, Texas called Haque Law, PLLC. My path here was not traditional and it was never part of any lifelong dream to open my own firm. If anything, I spent most of my early career heading in a completely different direction.
For nearly a decade, I worked in the healthcare industry, serving patients, families, and entire hospital systems. By early 2020, I was the CEO of a hospital while also trying to support my partner who had just told me we were expecting our second child. Life was already demanding, but when COVID arrived everything shifted overnight. I was hit with a 40 percent pay cut and after years of sacrificing time, energy, and stability, I made the hardest decision of my career. I walked away.
I did not have a plan. I did not have a backup. And I certainly did not imagine becoming an attorney entrepreneur in the middle of a global crisis. But that is exactly what happened. I spent six months unemployed, with a pregnant partner, a large mortgage, and no idea how long the pandemic would last.
Out of pure necessity, I opened a law firm.
Sometimes life does not gently guide you toward your next step. Sometimes it pushes you through a door you never once considered. I was suddenly overqualified for some jobs and not qualified enough for others. I felt stuck in a strange middle place where I knew too much and not enough at the same time.
What I did not realize then was that the decade I spent in healthcare had quietly prepared me for this moment. All of that leadership, all of that responsibility, all of that pressure was training. Without knowing it, I had picked up far more than I ever gave myself credit for.
So I started small. I started slow. And I made a promise to myself to overdeliver on everything. I would sometimes do the work before discussing payment simply to earn my clients trust. COVID made phone meetings normal and that worked in my favor. Every call mattered.
Then came my first big settlement. Most people would have paid off their credit cards or built a safety net. I did something different. I bought a G Wagon. My father thought I had lost my mind.
But that car became more than a purchase. It became my mobile office and my confidence. It was what clients saw when I pulled up to the coffee shops where I met them. It gave me presence during a time when everything in my life felt unstable. It was a way of telling myself that I was going to figure this out.
And slowly, that energy created momentum. The confidence became real. The clients grew. The firm grew. What started out of fear and necessity transformed into something meaningful.
Today, Haque Law is thriving. And none of this came from a childhood dream or a lifelong calling. It came from responsibility, necessity, and grit. It came from trusting that when life pushes you through an unexpected door, you do not retreat. You build something on the other side.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. In fact, the entire foundation of my firm was built during one of the most uncertain times in recent history. I started Haque Law at the very beginning of the pandemic with no job, a pregnant partner, a large mortgage, and absolutely no idea how long COVID would last. It was survival mode. I was figuring out how to keep my family supported while also trying to build something from nothing.
One of the biggest struggles early on was confidence. I had spent almost a decade in healthcare, not in a courtroom. I knew I had the discipline and leadership from running a hospital, but translating that into the legal world required a lot of self belief. There were moments when I felt overqualified for certain roles and moments when I felt underqualified for others. I lived in this strange middle ground where I had to constantly prove myself.
Another challenge was resources. I did not have a marketing budget or a team. I answered every phone call, drafted every document, and built the systems piece by piece. I met clients in coffee shops because I did not have an office yet. I overdelivered on everything because trust was my currency. I would often do the work before even talking about payment because I needed clients to believe in me.
There were personal struggles as well. Balancing home life, financial pressure, and the weight of starting a business during a pandemic took a toll. I questioned myself often. But every time a client trusted me, every time I got a good result, it added fuel to the fire.
What kept me going was responsibility. I had a family depending on me and quitting was never an option. Over time, the pressure became purpose. The fear turned into drive. And the firm started to grow in ways I never imagined.
So no, it was not smooth. It was difficult, humbling, and at times very uncomfortable. But every struggle forced me to become better. Those challenges shaped the firm into what it is today and shaped me into the attorney and leader I am proud to be.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Haque Law is a boutique personal injury firm based in Houston, built on the belief that every client deserves both high level legal representation and genuine human support. We specialize in motor vehicle accidents, catastrophic injuries, and cases involving children, but what we are really known for is the level of attention and care we bring to every person who walks through our door.
Many firms focus on volume. My firm focuses on people. I deliberately built a structure where clients can reach their attorney, where questions are answered quickly, and where every case receives personalized strategy. Coming from a healthcare background, I understand what it feels like to be vulnerable, uncertain, and overwhelmed. That experience shaped the way I practice law. I treat clients the same way I treated patients when I worked in hospitals, which is with compassion, patience, and clarity. Clients feel that difference immediately.
What sets us apart is the level of communication and transparency we provide. I never want a client to feel left in the dark. Whether they need updates, explanations, or reassurance, my team makes sure they always know what is happening with their case. We also invest heavily in building strong relationships with medical providers so clients get the care they need without delay.
Brand wise, I am most proud of the trust we have earned. Our growth has been driven almost entirely by referrals from former clients and community members. That means the people who lived the experience believe in us enough to send their family and friends. To me, that is the highest endorsement a firm can receive.
I want readers to know that Haque Law is built on service. We fight hard in negotiations and in litigation, but we also guide clients through the emotional and medical challenges that come with an injury. We are hands on, we are attentive, and we take pride in doing things the right way.
We are not just another personal injury firm. We are a team that treats clients like family, stands with them through every step, and delivers results that change lives.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My biggest advice for finding a mentor is to stop looking for the perfect person and start building real relationships. Mentors are not always the people with the biggest titles. They are often the people who show up for you in small but consistent ways. Some of the best guidance I have received did not come from attorneys. It came from doctors, business owners, and leaders I worked with in healthcare who taught me how to manage people, handle stress, and operate with integrity.
