Today we’d like to introduce you to Mari Kidd.
Hi Mari, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started working as an assistant at a psychiatric hospital in Norway when I turned 18, knowing I wanted to work within the field of psychology and pursue a career in the helping profession. I shortly after decided to study abroad on Long Island, NY to obtain my undergraduate in psychology. I continued to work at the psychiatric hospital during breaks and after graduation. Fast forward a few years later, I moved back to the US, but this time to TX for a MS in Mental Health Counseling. Since then I have had the privilege to work with individuals from all walks of life, broadening my expertise in counseling as a licensed professional counselor. In 2023 I found out we were having twin girls, and decided to balance motherhood while also starting my own private practice. An important piece of who I am, is being able to support clients in the counseling space, and whilst my priorities shifted in becoming a mom, I was not ready to let go of my dream in showing up for clients. That is when Rooted Well Counseling PLLC was founded and I continue to provide counseling services, just like I always envisioned. I specialize in trauma and anxiety, see all ages, including kids as young as 3 years old. I often find myself filled with gratitude that I get to do this – truly a dream come true!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With any change comes certain obstacles. Being Norwegian, there were challenges in obtaining my Visa and work authorization, as well as closing doors to previous opportunities to pursue new ones. Learning how to run a business while also figuring out motherhood meant a lot of late nights and lots of support from my husband. But with that comes a lot of appreciation for great friendships and family!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rooted Well Counseling PLLC?
Rooted Well Counseling PLLC is a counseling practice located in Cypress, 77433. I am a licensed professional counselor, trained in EMDR, with specializations including trauma and anxiety. I see all ages, including kids as young as 3 years old. I also have experience with grief and interpersonal conflict. I am available to see clients all over Texas virtually. I also offer presentations and/or talks for businesses and organizations.
I strongly believe it is a privilege to be in the counseling space with my clients, and I never take lightly the stories shared. Often times. I might be the first one to ever learn about a client’s experience, and that is an honor. To be trusted with someone’s trauma experiences, to learn about someone’s struggles and to see the positive changes and hope in them be established, is a privilege.
I am proud that I can authentically show up in the space, be caring and help client’s process and heal.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would not be where I am if I did not take any risks. Moving to a new country at a young age without knowing anyone lead to great friendships (eventually a husband), wonderful experiences, but also a lot of growing pains. My husband and I did long distance for years when we were dating, risking that it might never work out as we are from different countries. We are also raising young children without family near by, and most people suggested that once the twins were born we had to move, but here we are. Starting my own practice came with the risk of “what if I don’t have any clients?”, “what if this does not work out”, yet on the other hand I, in order to accomplish being where I am, there is continued risk that I am willing to take if it means the potential is being able to do what I love.
