Hi Melfri, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Thank you for having me! My name is Melfri Vargas, and I’m delighted to share my journey with you.
I discovered my passion for hair at the tender age of 16 while growing up in the Dominican Republic. Haircare and styling have always been a significant part of our culture, and I was captivated by the artistry and transformation that came with it. I began experimenting with my own hair, and soon enough, friends and family began seeking my services.
It wasn’t an easy decision, but at the age of 20, I made the bold move to come to the United States to pursue my dreams in the hair industry. I knew that in order to grow and learn, I needed to challenge myself in a new environment. It was a leap of faith, as I left my family and support system behind, but I was determined to succeed.
The initial hurdles were plentiful. Language barriers posed a significant challenge as I had to learn English from scratch. Additionally, establishing a reputation in a new country with a different hair culture proved to be quite difficult. However, I embraced these challenges and enrolled in English language courses while simultaneously immersing myself in the local hair community. I attended workshops, worked with mentors, and dedicated countless hours to practicing and perfecting my craft.
While pursuing my dreams, I became a single parent, which added an extra layer of responsibility. It was tough juggling between providing for my children and pursuing my career. I worked tirelessly, taking any opportunity that came my way, often working multiple jobs simultaneously. Through perseverance and the unwavering support of friends and family, I slowly but steadily built a loyal clientele. Over time, I was able to save enough to open my own salon, where I could create a space that reflected my vision and catered to my clients’ needs. I now have a great support team which includes my entire family and my husband Kelvin to help my business be a success.
Now I am Celebrating 10 years in business is an incredible milestone for me. It signifies not only my dedication and hard work but also the support of my amazing clients who have been with me throughout this journey. My salon stands out because we prioritize the health of our client’s hair. With 25 years of experience in the industry, I have learned the importance of nurturing and maintaining healthy hair. We offer personalized consultations, use high-quality products, and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques to ensure our clients receive the best care possible. I also have 2 amazing hairdressers that work full-time Diras Rodriquez and Ingris Moore, and also a wonderful shampoo tech Ironrelys.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely. While I was passionate about hair and loved what I was doing, it wasn’t always a smooth road. One of the major challenges I encountered was financial constraints. As a single parent, I had to balance my responsibilities as a mother while trying to build my career. There were times when I struggled to afford the necessary equipment, training, and even salon space. But my determination and love for what I do pushed me forward.
Another obstacle I faced was language barriers when I moved to the United States. English was not my first language, and communicating effectively with clients and colleagues was initially a struggle. However, I saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow, and I quickly enrolled in English language classes to improve my skills. Over time, I became more confident and adept at communicating with clients.
Hard work, perseverance, and a strong belief in my abilities played crucial roles in my journey. I started by working for a salon for 7 years, honing my skills and gaining valuable experience. I dedicated countless hours to learning new techniques, attending workshops, and staying up-to-date with the latest trends in the industry.
