Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Decker.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a young man, back in the early 1990’s I was working for a local carpet cleaner in the Northwest Indiana area. I was able to learn a little bit about the business and how NOT to do it. I enjoyed aspects of the work, but not company I was working with. I had the opportunity at that time to hire on at a new chain bookstore that was expanding rapidly and spent 17 years managing stores with them in Indiana, Ohio, California, and Texas. I had a great experience and learned management skills and how to run multi-million dollar stores.
After 17 years managing bookstores, my family and I decided it was time to move on. We decided to take my 401K from my retail job and start Decker’s Carpet Cleaning in 2011. At the time my son Quinn was a Junior in High School and worked nights and weekends helping to clean and delivering fliers door to door in our area. It was a lot of long days in the beginning, and we took any job we could get. That was a great experience because now we are called upon to help solve difficult flooring issues that many companies do not have the experience to handle.
Since 2011 ,we have expanded to 3 trucks and currently have a team of 7 people cleaning carpet, repairing carpet, and cleaning tile, upholstery, and stone all around the Houston area. Quinn and I own and operate the business together
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As any small business owner can attest, it has been very challenging at times, but also very rewarding to own and operate our own business. Like most business owners, we’ve faced burnout, lack of capital for growth, hiring challenges, broken machines, auto accidents, and of course storms, floods, and the pandemic. But having an opportunity to offer carpet cleaning in Houston as a small family business has allowed us time to work together and bond as a family and get to know the local community, while providing job opportunities for several people. We find it incredibly rewarding to help our customers maintain their homes, especially when pet issues are involved. We’ve always had pets in the home, and that was one of the reasons we felt it was a good idea to open our own carpet cleaning business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Decker’s Carpet Cleaning?
