Hidden Gems: Meet Natalie Thomas of Annual Underwear Affair Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Thomas

Hi Natalie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all began in the summer of 2018 when our family set out on a mission that would transform lives. We knew that teaching our children the true meaning of charity required more than just words—it required action.
The catalyst for our journey came in the form of a young man who was struggling at school. Despite his best efforts, he was having a hard time with teachers and classmates. After some investigation, we uncovered the painful truth: his family couldn’t afford the school uniforms and underpants he needed. This lack of basic necessities stopped him from participating in P.E. for fear of being found out.
This moment of realization sparked the birth of the Annual Underwear Affair (AUA). We were determined to make a difference, to ensure that every student could walk into school with dignity, confidence, and the comfort of clean, fresh undergarments. We realized that something as simple as underwear could have a profound impact on a child’s self-esteem and overall mental health.
Since then, AUA has been on a mission to help thousands of students start their school year on the right foot. We provide a week’s supply of undergarments to families in need, ensuring that no child has to face the discomfort or shame of not having the basics. We have grown to provide scholarships to those less fortunate entering college and offer programs to stimulate self-empowerment.
Our family now dedicates ourselves to collecting and donating undergarments, aiming to provide a week’s supply to families in need, no questions asked. If you and your family or friends would like to get involved or contribute to AUA, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email, phone, or our Instagram page. Together, we can make a difference, ensuring that every child has the fresh start they deserve, one pair of underwear at a time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a nonprofit can be incredibly rewarding, but it comes with its own set of challenges. I find the most daunting obstacles to be funding, finding dedicated supporters who truly believe in our mission, and increasing awareness.
As a certified boss babe, I can confidently tackle many challenges, but nonprofits face unique hurdles. Inconsistencies in funding and limited financial resources often plague our efforts. Grants and donations alone often fall short. Yet, finding the funds to develop sustainable revenue streams for the nonprofit is a Catch-22—we need funding to secure more funding!
Expanding our reach into new areas has also proven to be challenging. Without effective marketing tools and local community leaders who are passionate about advocating for our cause, we face significant strain on our board members. Socks and underwear, while seemingly simple, are lifelines of dignity, warmth, and hygiene. They are alarmingly among the least donated yet most requested items for the homeless and those in crisis.
Despite these challenges, our organization continues to thrive through creative problem-solving, passionate dedication, and unwavering leadership. Even when things don’t go as planned, our commitment to the cause drives us forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our founding family has a long history of both running successful businesses and contributing to community causes. However, the decision to launch Annual Underwear Affair Inc. was a unanimous one, driven by our collective commitment to becoming a dedicated resource for those in need.
At Annual Underwear Affair Inc., we are dedicated to ensuring that every student in crisis can return to school with a happier, healthier start—thanks to a week’s supply of seven pairs of fresh, clean undies. It’s hard to overstate the relief and boost in self-esteem that comes from addressing such a basic yet crucial need. By providing this essential support, we not only alleviate mental stress but also contribute to long-term success for these young people.
As a nonprofit, our mission revolves around maximizing our social impact. Here’s what makes us different: We’re committed to preparing young individuals to be active, engaged citizens who contribute to solving the challenges facing their communities. For us, citizenship goes beyond personal responsibility; it encompasses a dedication to community welfare and involvement.
We’re excited to invite you and your tribe to participate in a special event that embodies our mission: the first Undie 1K. This event is a fantastic opportunity for your family to get involved and help us extend our reach. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and strengthen the communities that have supported us.
Let’s join forces and make our efforts count for a lifetime. We look forward to your participation and support in this impactful initiative.
AUA wants you to be on the lookout for our line of undergarments that can be purchased to assist in the support of our communities. Bring AUA home with you!
