Today we’d like to introduce you to Quentin Washington.
Hi Quentin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up my dream was to be a mechanical engineer. It all started to shift in 2014 I attended North Shore Senior High School and was in the audio/visual class. One of the first videos I made was documentary about the life skills class at the school. From that video I became a finalist for the All American High film festival. My sophomore year I got out of band and was placed in the sophomore level A/V class. This teacher taught us the fundamental principles of A/V and lighting . The following year we received a new teacher and she gave us the freedom to be creative. She didn’t limit use on our visions while assisting us with the tools we needed. My senior another teacher came along and he prepared us for after graduation. By not only teaching us A/V but also life lesson so we would make the same mistakes he did. With mechanical engineering still heavy on my mind my teacher seen something different in me I didn’t see in myself. He constantly kept planting the seed that I was a good cinematographer and that I could good do great things, until that plant grew. He worked his hardest with us for one year by upgrading our equipment so we knew how to use cinema level cameras ,and industry level techniques . He modeled our creativity by giving us different practices to approach every project, while also placing us in real life situations. After graduation I attended Prairie View A&M University where every thing was put to the test. I purchased my first camera and started my company Moonlight Visuals. I started taking graduation pictures to build my portfolio. Meeting local Houston music artists to gain exposure with working with other creatives. Also, working on small film sets to continue learning. Today, my company name is Moonlight Productions where I specialize in cinematography while also doing photography and videography. My primary vision for may work behind the camera is just to bring people closer to Christ.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been as smooth as country back road. One of the biggest struggles was finding who I was called to be as a cinematographer. I used shoot anything and everything trying to make a name for myself and be the best until it destroyed everything inside of me. Once God called me back home there was new spark and new vision. Another struggling was building a relationship a music artist to the point we were family. Anytime we had and idea we would talk about it a immediately go shoot. Having someone with same mind set next to you and the relationship fading because you where losing yourself to your ambition to be the best. I had to learn so much in so many ways that its still a constant process so God shift me into what he called me to do.
