Hidden Gems: Meet Rodrick Chambers-Sims of H2O – Healing 2 Optimization

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodrick Chambers-Sims.

Hi Rodrick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Houston and I have a long history. Though I am not from Houston, I remember taking frequent visits to the Houston area coming up during my youth. It would be my oldest sister who opened a space for longer visits in the Houston area to happen over the course of about 20 years. Only in the last eight years did my visits to Houston become longer and longer; ultimately resulting in my moving to Houston in 2020. Ironically, I believe Houston was the last and first city I departed from when leaving and returning to the country from China. I moved out of the country at the end of August 2015 and returned over two years later after working as well as traveling to the beautiful country of China. At the end of my contract as an ESL Adult teacher…one of the students I traveled with suggested I return to China to help with a start-up inbound traveling company (NL30). Interestingly, I created a business plan for the company at the end of 2016 or early 2017. Up until the time I departed the country the first time, I would spend additional hours after my ‘9-5’ to help with as much as my skills allowed. All this to say, I ended up returning to China at the end of 2017 the day after Christmas. In the meantime, I spent most of those four months in good old Houston, Texas. This was a critical part of something very prophetic and spiritual. During that short time period, I established my DBA registered in Harris County. Not knowing that I would return and later establish my LLC and my health practice in Houston about 2-3 years later. Okay back to China, my focus was situated around using my DBA to establish an online business in the States, while continuing to establish a new business in China. So, I would spend most of my working hours on operational management things for our company and then afterward I would manage a fitness class at a local gym.

That was one thing I missed about China is it was so easy to create a business. Now, sustaining a business was a whole other beast. Nonetheless, this experience of returning to China afforded me to, literally, travel from East to West China; as close to the Himalayas as we could get before needing visas/permits to enter Tibet. Our company, NL30, focused the first few months on travel packaging. So, what’s the best way to accomplish this? Live the experience!! Truly, amazing times! Due to some visa complications, my time in China ended much sooner than we planned. I returned to the States with about three pairs of clothes because I had every intention of returning, so everything I owned was left back in my home city of Wuxi. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months and little to no pay and the visa process elongating resulted in me having to move on. Fortunately, my experience working within education afforded me the opportunity to transition into a summer position working for the University of Texas Arlington. This summer position turned into a year-long position working as an interim Director. I made a complete move back to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area after 17 years of being away and was dumbfounded the entire time. My world was shocked and shaken as I knew I would not return to the USA for years to come. And to be back in education was an even more shocking piece of news to adjust to. All things considered, my capacity in education the way that I had done it for several years of my professional career only brought heaviness of spirit. At the turn of 2019, I am not only working as Interim Director, but I am now also shuffling working full-time for an online school that I had been working part-time for about two years, at that time. The new year for many is that time to renew, reset, or get new orders…that was just what I did.

I placed my spiritual antennas out and sought discernment on where my next path would be and to my surprise I sensed massage therapy emerging. Yeah…this was way out of my range of professional options. I know what you’re thinking…I thought that too! However, living most of my life in the intuitive plan, I’ve never regretted following my heart or spirit, so why change the strategy now? You got it! After about one or two months of research and visiting massage therapy schools… I enrolled in the Cortiva Institute of Arlington, Tx. Never quite settling into being back in Texas, I kept my options open for where the next move would be. Where would be the best location for my new business as a licensed massage therapist and health/fitness professional? Out of the country was still on my radar, but it was unlikely this was going to happen anytime soon. Hmm…everything is warmer in California!? Yep! As I am hitting the mid-stride of my massage program I started investigating the Los Angeles, CA area to settle spiritually and professionally. I set my intention to visit Los Angeles, Ca the weekend of January 24-26th, 2020. This was only my second time visiting the city but it really felt like home. This was big! I, actually, had peace being in a city in the States…. In my time there I mapped out a few locations where massage and health were supposed to be a ‘thing’, which seemed virtually, everywhere. Honestly, that became so overwhelming I focused on this visit; just getting a sense of what my purpose was being in the area, what I discerned about the city, and most of all what I discerned about my purpose being in the city. Sunday, January 26th, 2020. I woke up about 5 am that morning and visited the Agape International Ministries where the great, now, Bishop Michael Beckwith serves as Pastor; had such a fantastic time there. And right after, I traveled, literally, a few blocks away to, what was, The Potter’s House of L.A. where the great Pastor Toure and Sarah Roberts lead pastored; I had just as much of a good time at this service, but it was the news that was released during the service that set off a cascade of serendipitous events that were already looming in the air. “Ladies and gentlemen, we hate to inform you but Kobie Bryant, his daughter, and others have been confirmed killed in a helicopter crash…” says the Pastor of the church. The atmosphere thickened with a cloud of grief that I had not experienced ever.

In all of my 20s, I averaged 2-5 funerals a year, but this was different. This was big! As I am leaving the church and heading back to Texas, I am now being trusted with the lingering thoughts of COVID-19. What did all of this mean? All of this was just too surreal. What I mean is, I tried very hard to ignore for months the fact that Covid-19, allegedly, started in Wuhan, China, which was only 719.9 km about an 8-hour drive by car from my city of Wuxi, China, where I lived for almost three years, my ‘timely’ return back to the States, and so much more…. Of course, the world would find out that only a matter of days or weeks would pass before what was a pandemic in other parts of the world would quickly become one of the worst pandemics in the USA. All the professional plans I had been building took a drastic turn. My massage therapy school shut down, which delayed graduation, which was a domino effect for every other decision. All that said, the series of events resulted in a move to Houston. I, fortunately, was able to complete my license in the summer of 2020, while moving from Arlington to Houston. I started working in an office in Katy, TX September; that office suffered a 300% loss over the next few months and I took my business on the road and online. Today, I am a traveling Massage Therapist and Health Practitioner for the Houston area; as far north as Conroe and as far west as Katy, TX.

And this is my ‘short’ story of being transplanted into Houston, TX.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
1. Being in harmony with myself. Why? Because it’s indicative of the safety established within the economy of my thought life. I am growing to understand what it means to “harmonize opposites” … there’s still a lot I don’t understand about this concept; however, as I progress to understand this I’ve gained the awareness that making peace with life is a must in order to have sustainable harmony.

2. Seeing others in harmony with themselves. Why? I love the community and what better way to share space with people who are in harmony within themselves; this doesn’t mean that we agree on everything…it does mean that we accept each other for who we are and can appreciate what each other brings to the table.

3. Being in good health. Why? I like the fact that I have normalized feeling good after eating a meal…I couldn’t say this for most of my life. It’s only been for the last almost ten years that feeling good after a meal is a norm. Usually, when what you eat makes you feel better both physically, mentally, and emotionally, your likelihood for good health is increasingly possible.

4. Being in Nature. Why? Being in nature gives me a charge like nothing else in the material world. Besides having healthy food in my body, being in nature around trees and fresh air SUPER enhances my quality of mental fitness as well as physical stamina.
