Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosie Moshrefi.
Hi Rosie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Rosie Moshrefi Founder & Principal Agent, Affordable Health for Texas Corp
Houston, Texas
Rosie Moshrefi is a prominent Iranian American entrepreneur in the health insurance industry who extends her influence beyond business to make a meaningful impact as a human rights activist in Houston and beyond. As the Founder and Principal Agent of Affordable Health for Texas Corp, established in December 2013, Rosie has built a respected agency that serves individuals, families, and small businesses throughout Texas and across the United States.
Since founding her agency, Rosie has dedicated her career to helping people navigate the complex world of health insurance with honesty, compassion, and expertise. Her mission is guided by a steadfast principle — to provide exceptional customer service and genuine care for every single client who reaches out for help finding the right health insurance plan and policy.
Rosie is deeply passionate about educating her clients and the community on how the U.S. health system works and what essential information every individual should know about their coverage and entitled benefits. She spends a great amount of time providing clear, practical guidance on the do’s and don’ts of health coverage, empowering her clients to make informed decisions and take better care of their health in today’s society. Her dedication to client education reflects her belief that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools for personal and financial well-being.
At Affordable Health for Texas Corp, Rosie and her team go far beyond simply enrolling clients in plans. They take the time to understand each client’s unique needs, explain their options clearly, and ensure they receive coverage that truly fits their medical, financial, and family circumstances. Her commitment to excellence, ethics, and personal attention has earned her a loyal client base and a reputation for professionalism and integrity.
Instrumental in the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, Rosie passionately advocates for human rights and women’s rights, contributing to the empowerment of recently arrived refugees by creating job opportunities and facilitating their professional integration in their new home, Houston. As a Key Board Member of the Equal Human Rights Organization, Rosie has received numerous recognitions for her outstanding contributions to human rights advocacy and entrepreneurship, underscoring her unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and compassion. Under her leadership and collaboration, the Equal Human Rights Organization has also earned several congressional recognitions for its impactful community work.
Beyond her professional and humanitarian achievements, Rosie’s deep compassion extends to animal welfare, particularly for street dogs and abandoned animals in her home country, Iran. Since 2019, she has been a dedicated supporter of numerous dog shelters and rescue organizations, providing financial assistance and resources for their continued care. Rosie also built a rehabilitation and treatment center in the city of Sari, in northern Iran, which now provides shelter, food, and medical care for more than 400 rescued dogs. Her unwavering dedication to animal welfare stems from her belief that every living being deserves love, safety, and dignity — and she continues to support local dog rescue groups to this day.
Through her dual roles as a business leader and humanitarian, Rosie Moshrefi continues to embody the values of service, empathy, and integrity, making a lasting difference in the lives of her clients, her community, and the countless animals whose lives she has touched.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Throughout her career, Rosie has faced and overcome numerous challenges in the ever-evolving landscape of the U.S. health insurance industry. Navigating the complex regulations, changing federal policies, and frequent updates to insurance marketplaces has required constant adaptation, education, and resilience.
One of the greatest challenges Rosie encountered early on was the inconsistency and complexity of communication between insurance companies and clients. She learned that many individuals struggle to understand the fine print of their policies — including provider network limitations, deductibles, copayments, and out-of-pocket maximums — often leading to confusion and frustration. Recognizing this gap, Rosie made client education a cornerstone of her business, simplifying complicated information and ensuring every client fully understands their benefits and rights.
Another obstacle Rosie continues to tackle is the rising cost of prescription medications and the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on affordability. Many of her clients face difficult choices between paying for life-saving medications and managing everyday expenses. Rosie takes extra steps to guide clients through cost-assistance programs, generic medication options, and government-funded initiatives that can reduce financial strain.
The issue of pre-authorization for medical care has also been a recurring challenge. Patients often experience delays in receiving essential treatments due to administrative barriers imposed by insurance companies. Rosie advocates strongly for her clients, ensuring that necessary approvals are obtained promptly and that no patient is denied timely care due to bureaucratic inefficiencies.
Another recurring difficulty involves provider networks and availability of care. Insurance plans often limit members to specific doctors, hospitals, or specialists, which can restrict access and create hardships, particularly in rural or underserved areas. Rosie has spent years learning the intricacies of each network, enabling her to help clients choose plans that maintain their preferred physicians or ensure quality care when transitions are necessary.
In addition, the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) — a document many clients find confusing or misleading — has been a point of frustration. Rosie dedicates time to walking clients through each EOB, helping them understand what is covered, what is owed, and why. Her goal is to eliminate the fear and confusion that too often accompany medical billing and insurance paperwork.
Through these challenges, Rosie has gained a deep understanding of both the human and technical sides of the healthcare system. Each obstacle has strengthened her mission: to protect her clients, educate them, and help them make informed decisions in a system that often feels overwhelming. Her resilience and commitment have transformed every difficulty into an opportunity to advocate more effectively for those she serves.
