Hi Skyy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, I started baking at the age of 7. My grandmother Dorothy had a stroke and could no longer prepare the desserts she once made, so I asked her to show me how to do it and I’ll make it for her. So my aunt would roll her in the kitchen and she would tell me step by step on what to do. I enjoyed it, and allowed me to grow a special bond with my grandmother! Years passed, my grandmother passes away in 2007! By that time I was a teen and was already a mother to my own child so I stopped baking! Didn’t really feel it was purposeful anymore since my grandmother was gone! But one day in 2011 I had a lot going on and felt so much of the pressure of life so I really started to miss my grandmother, wanted to talk to her, but I couldn’t. So I decided to make the first cake she ever taught me how to make! That amazing homemade caramel pound cake, oh how the aroma of the amazing flavors mixing together, put my grandmother’s face and smile right before me! It gave me some comfort and ease! So that experience caused me to start baking whenever I needed to see my big mama, or needed to relax! Any who I started posting the cakes on Facebook in 2013 and got a huge response to how amazing the cakes looked, so I then started to get request for me to make others cakes. So I did! 2014 I decided to open the business Tasty’z Messy Soul Kakes, and it was doing exceptionally well! But me still being young, not knowing how to fully run a business, and by this time I had already had 5 children and a few other triggering factors, I slowly stopped doing it. Just only by request! Now here we are in 2022 holidays are here, and at my household we always host the family pajamas party! Every year, of course, I always have to have a few messy soul Kakes on the table. Once again everyone loves them, but I had one specific cousin text my phone and couldn’t get over how amazing that praline pound cakes was! She literally begged me to never stop baking and told me the world need to taste this cake! Cause she had never had cake that good! So after that one text, I made it up in my mind that Tasty’z Messy Soul Kakes was coming back and was going to stay!!! (January 2023) But I wanted to do something different, instead of selling big Bundt cakes every day or the usual cupcakes! I wanted to make each and every one that taste our ”Kakes” personal so that we did! Started selling them everywhere from work, kids football games, kids schools, special events, and so on! And every time we did, we got crazy reactions! So, we started recording our customers! That’s when it really hit the fan, and everyone wanted a messy soul kake lol! We even have a customer review with almost a million views on TikTok! It’s still only the beginning, but we have so much in store! My husband and 9 kids are very involved and love this vision God have to me. So, we are just getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh my, it definitely has not been as smooth as I thought! Because u didn’t expect the grand response we have been receiving! We have so many customers ready for us to start shipping!!! But I guess it’s really not a bad hump in the road! Taking it as a blessing.
