Hidden Gems: Meet Summer Merryman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Merryman.

Hi Summer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in real estate kind of unconventionally. Growing up in Silicon Valley, the rental market got volatile quickly. Pricing out blue-collar workers and forcing them to relocate. For the ones that did stay, they needed help with rentals, and I had the connections. I ended up volunteering as a tenant rights advocate. Helping tenants find rentals and solving landlord issues that may arise. While doing all that, life took a turn, and I ended up relocating to Houston. That’s when I decided to enroll in college and get my AAS in real estate. Proudly, I was accepted into the honors program. This was a major accomplishment to me because I, like many others, struggled with learning disabilities. Four years in and I am a top producer on the team and plan to continue being a top producer. I am also the 2022 First Vice President of the Women’s Council of Realtors – Lake Houston.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The first major obstacle I faced was a lack of marketing knowledge. My first year was learning how to properly market myself and mastering social media.

Second obstacle was lack of a sphere. I had just relocated to Houston and had no one. The first year I was marketing like crazy and still getting nowhere. After wasting a whole year with a broker that was not helpful and very hands-off, I made the switch over to The Polomsky Team with Red Door Realty & Associate. Within 2.5 years, I became a top producer. Using Jim Polomsky’s methods. I get so much more out of this team than I had with my prior broker. If I can do it with no one, I know other agents can do it with more.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Lack of support is one of the reasons most new agents fail. My advice is to find someone who can mentor you. They must be willing to go the extra mile for you. Be available for you and make you a priority. I love mentoring and showing new agents that success is possible; they just need someone to show them the way.

Lake of confidence. It took me stepping out of my comfort zone and doing what I normally would not do to start to become successful. Joining the board for the WCR. I am forced to network and forced to speak up in front of an audience. I had to get comfortable in the spotlight.
