Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Dowley-Blackman.
Hi Tammy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Based on the attached document and LinkedIn profile, here’s a brief walkthrough of my story:
My journey has been defined by a single driving mission: to galvanize 1,000,000 leaders. In many ways, I’ve operated as an architect throughout my multi-dimensional career, with leadership development serving as the common thread that helps me design and deliver sustainable infrastructures that touch scores of lives.
I started by asking a fundamental question: “How do we galvanize leaders for change?” This led me to found four companies over the last two decades, all focused on creating tools and platforms to support organizational and leadership development. My foundation was built through significant experiences as the former CEO of two nationally affiliated nonprofits, where I helped steward substantial growth, and as the founding Director of the Proteus Fund Diversity Fellowship – a nationally recognized human resources tool designed to bring more equitable representation and systemic change to large-scale philanthropic systems.
Tammy Dowley-Blackman began Group, LLC has evolved from a small boutique consulting company founded in 2004 in response to the offer of amazing senior leader roles that came with limited flexibility to remain a highly engaged mom to a young daughter and a leader creating and stewarding large projects, into a national company that has grown and hit milestones that less than 4% of businesses ever achieve. In addition, the company is a certified MBE, WOSB, and WBENC woman-owned company, proud graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program, and been recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest-growing companies in the Mid-Atlantic Region (#85 in 2023, #60 in 2024).
Our company now operates through multiple brands, including TDB Group Strategic Advisory, Looking Forward Lab, and Cooper + Lowe, and we’ve partnered with 200+ institutions with $14+ billion in assets, impacting over 100,000 leaders. We’ve developed four proprietary tools and continue to serve corporate, government, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors.
The mission remains constant: galvanizing leaders because I believe leadership exists in and for everyone – it’s not reserved for a select few, but rather cultivated and supported to create equity for all.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Here are some of the struggles we’ve navigated:
As a woman-owned business in the leadership development space, establishing credibility with large corporate, government, and philanthropic institutions required persistence and proving our value repeatedly. Breaking into networks that historically weren’t designed for businesses like ours was challenging.
Scaling Across Multiple Sectors: Working simultaneously with corporate, government, nonprofit, and philanthropic clients meant constantly adapting our approach, understanding different compliance requirements, and managing varying timelines and decision-making processes across sectors.
Evolving from a single focus to operating multiple brands (TDB Group Strategic Advisory, Looking Forward Lab) while maintaining quality and our core mission required careful strategic planning and resource allocation. Growing from individual consulting to impacting 100,000+ leaders meant building systems and teams that could scale.
Building and sustaining four companies over two decades meant weathering multiple economic cycles, funding challenges, and market shifts while staying true to our mission of galvanizing leaders. Balancing Board Service and Business Growth: Serving in leadership roles like my six-year term as TSNE Board President (leading a $64 million organization through unprecedented change) while growing my own companies required careful time management, the selection and training of key staff members, and prioritization.
Despite these challenges, each struggle reinforced our core belief that leadership exists in and for everyone, and that conviction has carried us through to where we are today – certified across multiple designations and recognized for our rapid growth.
We’ve been impressed with Tammy Dowley-Blackman Group, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My professional life centers around building and leading Tammy Dowley-Blackman Group, LLC, which has evolved into a comprehensive leadership development enterprise. As the founder and CEO, I’ve developed this into a multi-brand company that operates across corporate, government, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors.
Our business model is built around three core brands: TDB Group Strategic Advisory (our management consulting firm specializing in organizational and leadership development using our proprietary TDB Group Truss Framework) and Looking Forward Lab (which partners with corporations and higher education on Gen Z workplace development); and Cooper + Lowe, a B2B marketplace supporting entrepreneurs. We’ve also developed four proprietary tools, including the Blueprint Lab for senior leaders and the SP Accelerator for early-stage strategic planning.
What makes our practice unique is our systematic approach to leadership infrastructure. We don’t just provide consulting, we design and deliver comprehensive ecosystems that convene, educate, incubate, train, and launch leaders while supporting their institutional advancement. This has allowed us to partner with 200+ institutions managing $14+ billion in assets and impact over 100,000 leaders.
Our firm has achieved multiple certifications (MBE, WOSB, WBENC) and recognition (Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing companies, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses graduate), but more importantly, we’ve built a sustainable business model that serves our mission of galvanizing 1,000,000 leaders. We operate with a team of 20+ experts across assessment, communications, finance, fundraising, HR, marketing, organizational development, project management, research, staffing, and strategic planning, allowing us to provide comprehensive solutions rather than just individual services
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Based on my experience building multiple companies and serving on various boards, here’s what has worked well for me in mentorship and networking:
– Approach Networking as Relationship Building, Not Transactional Exchange:
I’ve found the most valuable connections come from genuinely believing in people, communities, and ideas, which is one of our core values. Rather than networking for immediate gain, I focus on how I can contribute value to others first. This approach has led to meaningful relationships that have sustained over decades.
– Leverage Board Service and Volunteer Leadership:
Some of my most impactful mentoring relationships and networks developed through board service. My six year term as TSNE Board President, serving on the Proteus Fund Board, and advisory roles with institutions such as, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, created opportunities to work alongside seasoned leaders in collaborative, mission-driven environments. These settings allow you to demonstrate your capabilities while learning from others.
– Seek Mentors Across Multiple Sectors:
Working across corporate, government, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors has given me diverse perspectives and a broader network. Don’t limit yourself to your immediate industry, some of my best insights have come from leaders in completely different fields who bring fresh approaches to common challenges.
– Participate in Structured Programs:
Programs like Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses and the C200 Champion Program provided both mentorship and peer networks. These structured environments create natural opportunities for relationship building with built-in accountability and follow through.
– Be Intentional About Reciprocity
I’ve always looked for ways to give back, whether through speaking, mentoring others, or sharing resources. When you consistently add value to your network, people naturally want to support your success as well. The key is authenticity and long-term thinking rather than transactional approaches.
