Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamra Tipton.
Hi Tamra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a passion for cosmetics but never really thought that it would be anything more than just a hobby, something I enjoyed doing. If you would have asked me what my dream job was growing up, it would without hesitation, be to become a nurse. So much so that I went on to college to pursue a degree in nursing but after three years, I realized that this was just not what made me happy. After a couple of different job transitions, I really started to examine what I was putting my energy into and wanted to do something that not only excited me but was also fulfilling as well. The job prior to getting me to where I am today was in a field that helped people, which is what I have always wanted to do. Even though I played a major part in the industry of changing people’s lives, I was not the one actually providing making people feel better about themselves. This left me feeling fulfilled. I knew that I wanted to be the one making people feel better about themselves. After four years, I knew that it was time for me to go after my love of helping people in the way I was most passionate about which is when I decided to start my career in the beauty industry. At the time, there was a new semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that was becoming extremely popular in the beauty world therefore I decided to learn more about it by research and speaking with other artists who were already providing this type of service. I became fascinated with it and from there, I went on to take the necessary trainings to become a certified PMU artist for those who wanted to enhance their facial features such as their eyebrows and lips with procedures called lip blushing and microblading.
Once I began doing that, I knew that I did not want to stop there and that is when I started to expand my services. It was then that I decided to pursue becoming a makeup artist. I had helped my mom with several weddings and that is when I saw the need for my services in the world of weddings. This was a great opportunity to help brides-to-be feel great about themselves on one of the most important days of their lives. We all know that on these occasions, women want to look their best. My first experience working with brides and bridesmaids was at both of my sisters’ weddings, which were months apart. I was actually supposed to just be there as a bridesmaid but ended being the makeup artist for both of them. The MUA at the first wedding did such a horrible job that the bride and her bridesmaids were upset with the outcome therefore I stepped in to correct the mistakes they made and make the bride, her bridesmaid, and mother of the bride feel much better about how they looked. At the second wedding, the MUA had to cancel a couple of days before the wedding due to becoming ill, so I volunteered to serve as the MUA for the wedding. It was then that I saw the need for a capable, dependable MUA to help ease the burden for brides, bridal parties, and families. I also realized how much I enjoyed the experience and felt that I had found your niche. That is when The Glam Studio was born and I started providing multiple cosmetic services for women to enhance their beauty as well as bring out their confidence.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was definitely not easy; especially since Covid-19 hit right at the peak of things. From leaving my corporate job to taking a leap of faith on my passion, I came across many challenges. The biggest struggle was being a single mother of three kids and going to school at the same time. I did not have any financial backing or support from banks or investors. I used my entire savings to provide myself with everything I needed to start my business. Also, I did not have any ties to the beauty industry/scene in Houston so it was difficult for me to get my name out there. COVID-19 continues to be a major obstacle with booking clients and limiting social interaction. Even with all these struggles, I did not allow any of them to stop me or slow me down.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Glam Studio is a beauty business that offers makeup services and semi-permanent cosmetic procedures such as microblading, micro shading and lip blushing to enhance symmetry and fullness of the eyebrows and/or correct any discoloration for scars and uneven pigmentation in the lips. I specialize in makeup services for weddings and events to women all over the Houston and surrounding areas. What sets me apart from others is that this is not just a “job” for me this is what I love to do. I am a very personable person and establish amazing relationships with my clients. The Glam Studio is a one stop shop that also offers traveling services for any client that is outside of the Houston area and/or out of state.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I have already started looking into furthering my business by bringing on other talented artists and stylists so that we can provide the best services for all our client’s needs. Finding my niche in the wedding industry has also helped me to start another business as a wedding and event planner/coordinator. I see over the next few years being the ultimate wedding package. My team will offer everything so that my client(s) do not have to stress over finding different vendors as I will have them available through my business.
