Today we’d like to introduce you to Trinity Overton
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my business in high school, always driven by a hustler mentality, especially coming from Detroit, the home of hustlers. Growing up was a struggle, and eventually, my parents couldn’t afford to keep my hair done, so I started teaching myself. At first, it was a mess. I practiced on friends and family, and it came out okay, but I kept at it.
During the summer of 2018, I apprenticed under my former hairstylist, Katie (RIP), who taught me the basics: how to wash, detangle, and sanitize properly. She gave me the foundation I needed. By 2021, I decided to work for myself fully. At the time, I was working at White Castle, earning $10 an hour. In the summer of 2021, they raised the hourly wage to $15 but cut my hours. So, I decided to use my PTO for a month, bet on myself, and move into a salon booth.
When I first started doing hair full-time, I was only charging $100 per hairstyle, making my first $1,000 in a week. Realizing I could make that much, I knew I could succeed. I even started an online business selling lashes and paid people to sell them for me during my senior year. However, I quickly learned that fast money isn’t always good money. I went broke because I didn’t know how to save, forcing me to leave the salon booth in the fall of 2021 and return to a job making $10 an hour.
Working at a gas station motivated me to come back 10 times harder. I couldn’t afford to go to college despite being in the top 5 of my high school class, which devastated me at the time. But looking back, I’m glad because I avoided student debt. In the summer of 2022, I started taking clients again and was fully booked every month.
My journey to Houston began when I visited in November 2022 for my 19th birthday. I fell in love with the city and kept telling everyone I was coming back. I researched everything about Houston, and my decision was sealed in March 2024 when I visited the rodeo and felt at home again. In June 2024, I drove 20 hours from Detroit to Houston, and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some struggles along the way involved learning about myself. I lost a lot of friends during my journey as an entrepreneur. I realized many of my friends were holding me back because they saw the light in me. I also had to take accountability for my own actions, stop being the victim in my story, and start taking control of it.
In 2022, my battle with depression was overwhelming. I didn’t want to let it control me anymore, so I had to look within myself and let go of a lot of things. I had to heal and understand that I would never completely get over my trauma but that I had to get through it. Acknowledging my feelings instead of keeping them hidden was a crucial part of my healing process.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
. For anyone just starting out or thinking about starting, my advice is to simply begin. Often, we can be our own worst enemies, and I was no exception, constantly overthinking and doubting myself with thoughts like, “What if I’m not good enough?” or “What if I don’t measure up?” But sometimes, you just have to take that leap of faith and start the process.
When I first began doing hair, I wasn’t perfect. It takes practice, and I wish more people had pushed me to practice more. Nobody wakes up an expert—it takes time and dedication. If you want to succeed, you have to practice and learn every day. Even now, as one of the best in my field, I still read, take notes, and continue learning. It’s essential always to keep growing.
