Howdy! Allow me to formally introduce myself…my name is Vester Harper better known as “LADY BG” – Houston’s Hottest Karaoke DJ. As the pioneer of the “Urban Karaoke” scene in Houston,TX it’s such an honor to see how I’ve created a lane that resonates so well within this great city. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to take it all in and believe that a tiny dream I had many years ago would lead me to where I am today.
Throughout my upbringing, music played an integral role in shaping my life. I have fond memories of my mother playing her favorite albums while preparing our Sunday dinners, listening to the radio during our frequent road trips, and introducing me to the enchanting world of Broadway musicals. My passion for music led me to pursue theater studies in both high school and college, further fueling my love for performance.
One transformative evening during my college years, a friend took me to a karaoke bar, and from that moment, I was captivated by the experience. This newfound passion led me to invest in top-of-the-line karaoke equipment, cementing my deep-seated love for this form of entertainment. Fast forward 21 years, and this investment has proven to be life-changing.
Driven by an unwavering dedication to elevating the art of karaoke, I established a company known for delivering an unparalleled “Premiere Karaoke Experience.” Our commitment to excellence has attracted a diverse clientele, including corporate, celebrity, and private event patrons who have embraced the unique offerings of LADY BG PRODUCTIONS. Currently, our shows and events are hosted across various states, including Florida, Texas, and Louisiana.
At the heart of our success is the perfect fusion of charismatic personalities, exceptional Karaoke DJ services, captivating showmanship, and unwavering professionalism. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a proud African American woman who completely owns and runs her own business, I’ve navigated through numerous obstacles in the entertainment industry. Despite the lack of financial backing from investors, business partners, or promoters, I have encountered and risen above various forms of discrimination, from unwanted advances to being offered undue “gifts” in exchange for bookings or show-hosting opportunities.
Events have posed challenges, with instances of verbal disrespect, invasion of personal space, and inappropriate touching, all of which have only fueled my determination. Even securing contracts and bookings has been a struggle simply due to my gender, as there is an unjust expectation that I may not measure up to my male counterparts. However, I have consistently delivered exceptional service and talent, shattering any preconceived gender biases.
Despite the unfair assumption that female DJs are less competent, I have continuously exceeded expectations at every event, proving wrong any skepticism about my abilities.

It’s a common misconception that higher education isn’t necessary for aspiring Karaoke DJs, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. My advice to anyone starting out is to dive into studying and mastering all the components that contribute to a successful karaoke show. This entails acquiring an in-depth understanding of not only the technical intricacies associated with the audio and visual aspects but also the essential skills required for effective marketing, promotion, financial management, as well as proficiency in hospitality and customer service. Had I been aware of the option to enroll in specialized courses at a community college to gain insights into technical aspects such as speaker installation, cable and cord variations, and mixer operations, I could have saved myself from numerous trial and error instances and probably prevented damaging a few speakers.
