Hidden Gems: Meet Whitney Mickins of Pixel Heart Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Mickins.

Hi Whitney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always liked taking pictures for as long as I can remember. When I didn’t have a phone I’d have either the disposable cameras that you have to go to Walgreens and develop or I’d use my parents flip phone. When I got older they really saw how much I enjoyed it and bought me my first camera a LUMIX G85 and then later on in the summer of 2016 I had my first photography class. I took 2 classes at the Houston Center for Photography. Then later on I found a friend that had a mutual interest in photography we decided to start a business in 2019 the first year we did struck for free or cheap just to get our name out there. It went on like that til covid impacted and we went separate ways i continued and she went on other endeavors. I will say photography has slowed down a little bit because I started a full time job as a surgical tech but every now and then I’ll take pictures for someone on the weekends. It’s nice to have it as a second job because the amount of marketing I had to do in the beginning on my own was a lot, so now doing it as a word of mouth it’s great not to stress out on trying to get clients. I still enjoy it just as much as I did then!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road when you learn you learn n you can’t just be word of mouth when we started off in the beginning. Then restructuring when me and my partner went separate ways she still would help me in a heart beat if I needed an extra hand but I knew it wasn’t her passion to do for a long run.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
You should know that I work with your budgeting we know finding quality photographers with a decent price can be hard so that’s why we will work with you to bring your photos to life with the best package! We mainly specialize in photography but can also provide videography. I’m known for portraits and business rebranding photos. I’d say what sets me apart from others is the best quality photos with great prices. I’m most proud of how we grew over the years and how returning clients still trust us to bring their best moments to life. I started taking concert photos as well to get into that industry the different lighting is always a new way to test my skills because no lighting is the same! I’d love to have the opportunity to offer that more to local bands as a start! I also started offering maternity photos and canvas photo albums can be included in packages!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Personality wise I’d say I come across as observant, thoughtful, and grounded. I like to read a room before engaging, which shows strong social intuition and emotional intelligence. I value connection over crowd size — it’s not about how many people I’m around, but whether they feel right to me.

I’m goal-oriented and self-motivated, but also know when to slow down and recharge. I don’t react impulsively, I reflect first.

Interest wise I was always into art drawing, painting, crafting, sculpting, so I guess photography was bound to happen as a form of art.
