Today we’d like to introduce you to Zubin Kuvadia.
Hi Zubin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Munch Craft started with a simple frustration: why are “clean” snacks so boring, and “craveable” snacks so full of junk? I have a PhD in Chemical Engineering and spent over a decade at Dow, but I’m also just a lifelong snacker and a dad who reads ingredient labels — and I kept landing on packaged nuts that were either fried in cheap seed oils, coated in sugary syrups, or just flavorless. Nuts are naturally one of the best snacks out there; the category just needed an upgrade.
I partnered with the real expert — my father, who we call the “Flavor King,” with over 40 years in food science and technology. He brings the artistry, I bring the engineering, and together we source some of the creamiest cashews in the world from Western Maharashtra, India. We built a process around solving the two things that ruin most nut snacks: grease and staleness. We use precision air-roasting — high-velocity hot air instead of oil — so you taste the actual richness of the nut instead of a fryer, and we nitrogen-seal every bag the moment roasting finishes to lock in crunch and keep oxygen out.
Getting here wasn’t obstacle-free — I personally navigated FDA filings, customs, and supply chains from India, designed the packaging myself, and stood in stores sampling to customers directly. What started as four flavors in local Houston and Pearland specialty stores has grown into a lineup that now includes Salted Caramel and Coffee Mocha Almonds alongside the originals, sold in singles, 3-packs, 8-packs, and a 4-flavor Discovery Bundle. This year we also launched on Amazon, which meant learning an entirely new operational world — FBA, Prime eligibility, national fulfillment — stacked on top of everything we’d already built for direct-to-consumer and the 15+ wholesale doors we picked up around Houston. It’s the same hands-on, figure-it-out approach that got the first bag on a shelf, just applied to a much bigger stage now
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the biggest obstacle hasn’t changed much since we started — it’s retail. Getting into more physical stores as a new, unproven brand is hard on its own; buyers don’t know you, you don’t have a sales history to point to, and shelf space is limited and competitive. But the harder part, the one people don’t talk about as much, is what happens after you get on the shelf. Getting a bag placed is one battle — getting it to actually move, to get picked over brands shoppers already trust, is the real one. If a new product doesn’t sell through fast enough, you risk losing that shelf space entirely, sometimes before you’ve even had a real chance to build awareness with customers.
That’s part of why we’ve leaned so hard into building demand directly with customers — through our own site, and more recently Amazon — because proving people will actively choose and reorder Munch Craft gives us real numbers to bring back to retail buyers, instead of just asking them to take a chance on us. It’s been a constant push on both fronts at once: earn the shelf, then earn the sale, over and over, one store and one customer at a time.”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Munch Craft?
Munch Craft’s mission is simple: make everyday snacking adventurous, flavorful, and better-for-you — without asking people to compromise on taste to get there. Where we differ from most “healthy snack” brands is that we refuse to choose between clean and craveable. Our ingredient philosophy is strict — no artificial colors, no synthetic flavors, no artificial sweeteners — but the flavors themselves are bold and globally inspired, not the muted, apologetic versions you often get from “better-for-you” brands.
We’re proudly Houston-based and Houston-warehoused, and that local identity matters to us — most of our early wholesale relationships, now 15+ doors, are right here in the Houston area, and we handle distribution and fulfillment out of Houston ourselves rather than outsourcing it away from the city we started in.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is that Munch Craft has never felt like it’s chasing trends — every flavor and format decision has come from an actual gap we saw: a discovery bundle for people who don’t want to commit to one flavor, an 8-pack for stocking up, a 3-pack for gifting. It’s been built around how people actually snack, not around what’s easy to manufacture. What I want readers to know is that this is still very much a founder-led, hands-on brand — every flavor has been personally tasted and refined by me and my father before it ever reaches a shelf, and that level of care is something we’re not planning to lose as we grow into new categories like almonds and, eventually, pistachios.”
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about Houston:
“What I love most about Houston is its diversity — it’s one of the most culturally diverse cities in the country, and that shows up everywhere, especially in the food scene. That diversity is honestly baked into Munch Craft itself; our flavors — Peri-Peri Lime, Guava Blaze, Jalapeño Cheese — are globally inspired because Houston is a city where those influences are just part of everyday life, not something exotic. I also love the local entrepreneurial and small-business community here. Houston gave Munch Craft its first chance — the first 15+ retail doors that carried us were local, Houston and Pearland specialty stores willing to take a bet on a brand-new founder with no track record. That kind of support is hard to find, and it’s a big part of why Munch Craft will always be a Houston-rooted brand, even as we grow beyond it.”
What I like least:
If I had to name something, it’s that Houston has fewer gourmet and specialty grocery stores compared to the coasts, so there are simply fewer natural doors for a brand like ours to walk into locally. There also aren’t major food and beverage trade shows happening here the way there are in cities like LA or New York, so a lot of the industry connections and discovery opportunities other founders get more easily, I’ve had to go find elsewhere or build myself. It’s not a complaint about Houston so much as a reality of building a specialty food brand here — you have to work a little harder to get discovered.
