Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Gibbs.
Hi Whitney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in healthcare since I was 16 years old. At the time, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my career. I was asked everyday by my high school history teacher what was I going to do after high school. I sort of just made up that I would be a nurse because I became tired of telling him that I didn’t know. I was invited to Communities in Schools, which assisted youths with career and college guidance. They offered me an internship at St Luke’s Hospital and placed me on the cardiovascular unit. It was through that program in which I watched my first open heart surgery. I met Dr. Denton Cooley, which I thought was the coolest. They also encouraged me to work as a nurse’s assistant in the school nurse’s office. I can say that I flourished as a Registered Nurse and later furthered my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I became such a help with assisting families in finding caregiving services for their family members that I decided to make it a business in 2019. I had also been the caregiver for my grandmother and knew what patients needed and what people could afford. I knew how important it was to match the right people to the patient. This is something I had been unconsciously doing anyway for years so it comes naturally.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was not a smooth road. I’m a workaholic some might say. I was reluctant to cut back on working as a Nurse Practitioner to put time into my business. I eventually found a good balance, but it’s still difficult at times. I spent a lot of time securing contracts that ended up not being worth it. I have spent hours staying up late after work making sure I’m compliant with state regulations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about HEARTS AND HANDS PERSONAL CARE LLC?
Hearts and Hands Personal Care LLC is a home health aide and companion care service. We provide none-medical home care to seniors, elderly, mentally challenged, and physically challenged individuals. Patients are allowed to remain in their homes as long as possible. Caregivers assist with bathing, hair washing, medication reminders, toileting, dressing, errands, light meal prep, light housekeeping, and other personal needs. Most of my clients come to me through referral because I tailor each assignment. I come out to assess the patients’ needs myself. I make sure the caregiver is trained appropriately for the job. I am lower in cost than many personal care companies because I’ve been the consumer. I know how important it is to keep cost down. However, I also make sure that affordable help is also quality help.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
They are surprised when I work as a caregiver. If someone can’t be there or an emergency occurs, I fill in. I turn patients, lift, meal prep and the whole bit.
