Inspiring Conversations with Andrea Karow of Davenport Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Karow.

Hi Andrea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have had an interest in home design as early as high school. I frequently changed my bedding and wall art to suit the time. I went off to college and while I didn’t purse a degree in design I had one of the most chic dorm rooms! I worked in public relations for years and would dabble in design on the side helping family and friends improve their spaces. I met a designer who was working for a family friend and she told me that I had such a natural ability and that if I ever moved back to Houston to look her up and she would hire me–and that’s what I did. I worked for her for a year gleaning so much about the design industry. A couple years later I started my own business focusing on residential design for middle-america. It has flourished into a full service design firm where remodels are my bread & butter. I have partnered with a construction team who executes my design plans and I serve as a project manager for the remainder of the process. It has turned out to be such a desirable arrangement for clients–because its turn key!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having no idea how to run a business it of course came with hurdles–how to charge, what’s an hourly rate, contracts, etc. I have learned something from each project and continue to improve the process.

We’ve been impressed with Davenport Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Davenport Design provides interior design and remodeling services for the greater Houston area and beyond–we’ve done projects in Tennessee & Florida as well! I believe what sets my firm apart from others is the relationship I have with a construction crew. As I mentioned previously I do the design on the front end and they execute my plan and I serve as the project manager for the remainder of the process–this provides so much ease of mind to my clients; its the perfect relationship.

I am most proud of the quality of work we provide. I am consistently being thanked by my clients for the hard work the crew does in their houses–we treat it like it’s our home.

What were you like growing up?
I have always been an extrovert and a social butterfly–my mom would say I have never met a stranger. I have always been an organized person who loves checklists. That has come in handy with my line of work!
