Today, we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Karow.
Hi Andrea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I have loved design since high school (20+ years ago– yikes!) I was the girl changing her bedding and room art each year; I always loved the color and sometimes would use a bit too much!
I worked for a friend’s design firm for a year and gained so much knowledge I decided to go out on my own. I started my business mostly from family and friends giving me small projects. From there, it grew to friends of friends and has just spun into referral after referral!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business is not for the faint of heart.
I have had to learn how to navigate various personalities, such as clients not paying their bills or ordering the wrong item because it wasn’t to scale!! It’s gotten infinitely better every year as I’ve grown and have a process of how to mitigate any of those issues.
As you know, we’re big fans of Davenport Design. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
Davenport Design is a one-woman design firm that specializes in remodeling.
I have partnered with a construction crew, so once my design and selection process has been completed, I can have the construction team execute my plan. This is unique as most designers hand off their plans and aren’t a part of this process.
From the onset, I wanted to offer design services in middle America. Interior design can be seen as only available to the wealthy, and I wanted to offer beautiful and affordable designs.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
You must be super organized and detailed oriented to be successful in any business.
For interior design specifically, I wish I had been more confident in my pricing and not adjusted to those clients because, at the end of the day, they didn’t value what you do.
