Inspiring Conversations with Angela Henderson of The Tax Bawse Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Henderson.

Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was still a little girl when I first learned that numbers told stories.

I didn’t know the words “tax return” or “financial literacy” I just knew the rhythm of my mother’s evenings, the soft hum of the house settling down, the scratch of a pencil against paper, the careful way she stacked documents into neat piles while stapling them as if they mattered deeply because they did.

I watched from the corner of the room, as my mother prepared tax returns for her clients. She treated every folder with respect. She was masterful with her adding machine as she struck the keys with her nails. Every name mattered. Every dollar had a purpose. People trusted her with the most vulnerable parts of their lives, their income, their mistakes, their hopes for a refund that might fix something that had been broken all year.

What struck me most wasn’t the math. It was her focus.

She didn’t rush. She didn’t guess. She explained things out loud sometimes not for me, but almost as if she was teaching the numbers themselves to behave. I learned early that accuracy was a form of care, and that service meant more than just completing a task. It meant protecting someone when they weren’t in the room.

Clients would call and their voices carried gratitude, worry, and relief. When my mother hung up the phone, she always had the same quiet confidence as if she knew she had done right by someone who needed her.

Without realizing it, I was being trained.

I learned that money is emotional. That paperwork can change lives. That integrity shows up in the details no one else sees. I learned that being trusted is not accidental it’s earned, one return, one client, one careful decision at a time.

Years later, when I found myself doing this work, it didn’t feel new. It felt familiar, like muscle memory, like coming home.

What began as a child watching my mother at the table became a calling rooted in legacy. The lessons weren’t written down, but they were absorption of patience, precision, accountability, and pride.
This work has always been part of my story.

I just didn’t know it yet.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I learned quickly that tax and financial work is not just about numbers it’s about responsibility. One small mistake can carry heavy consequences, and that weight can feel lonely. There were moments when I questioned myself, when I replayed decisions over and over, wondering if I had done enough, checked enough, protected enough.

This industry is unforgiving. It doesn’t leave much room for learning out loud. You’re expected to be confident even when you’re still growing, knowledgeable even when the rules change faster than anyone can keep up. Laws shift. Software updates. Regulations tighten. And you’re expected to adapt immediately because at the end of the day your clients livelihoods depend on it.

There were seasons of long nights and short patience. Seasons where I carried the stress of other people’s finances on my shoulders while still trying to build my own. I faced skepticism, being underestimated, questioned, or assumed inexperienced before I ever opened my mouth. Sometimes because of my age. Sometimes because of my gender. Sometimes simply because I didn’t “look like” what people expected a tax professional to look like.

Trust had to be earned repeatedly.

I’ve dealt with clients who waited until the last minute, brought chaos instead of documents, and expected miracles. I’ve had to deliver hard truth that looked like telling clients what they didn’t want to hear, not what would make them comfortable. I’ve had to stand firm when it would’ve been easier to bend.

There were moments of burnout. Moments where the pressure of doing things right felt heavier than the reward of doing them at all. Moments where I wondered if carrying this legacy was worth the cost.

But every struggle sharpened me.

It taught me boundaries. It taught me confidence rooted in competence, not approval. It taught me that professionalism means standing steady even when the room is uncomfortable. And it reminded me why my mother moved with such care because this work demands respect.

I didn’t arrive here untouched. I arrived refined.

And despite the challenges, I stay because this industry doesn’t just need more professionals. It needs protectors. It needs people who understand that behind every return is a real life, real pressure, real trust.

The struggles didn’t break me.

They built me into the professional I am today.
