Hi Aniqa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Joyful Journeys Event Planning began with a little nudge from a good friend and my family who saw something in me before I fully saw it in myself. I was always the go-to person for planning family events, decorating for parties, and adding creative touches that made moments feel special. One day, my friend said, “You should really be doing this professionally,” and that simple encouragement planted the seed.
With their support and my growing passion, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own business. I started small—birthday parties, baby showers but the joy I felt creating those events was unmatched. From there, things began to grow through word-of-mouth, social media, and lots of hard work. Now, based in Houston, Joyful Journeys creates stylish, playful, and modern events of all sizes. It’s been an exciting journey, and I’m so grateful to be doing what I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but every challenge has helped shape me and my business. One of the biggest struggles has been learning to balance it all especially as a mom. Building Joyful Journeys while raising kids means a lot of late nights, early mornings, and finding ways to stay creative even when I’m exhausted.
There were times I doubted myself, especially during slow seasons or when trying to stand out in a crowded industry. Juggling family responsibilities while running a business can be overwhelming, but it’s also what fuels me. My kids are one of my biggest motivators—they’re watching me chase my dreams, and that pushes me to keep going.
There have definitely been bumps in the road, but I’ve learned to give myself grace, ask for help when I need it, and celebrate the small wins along the way.

Finding a mentor doesn’t always mean seeking someone with a big title. It can start with connecting with people in your industry who inspire you, even online. Don’t be afraid to reach out, ask questions, or simply show appreciation for someone’s work. Many are more open to sharing than you’d think.
What’s worked well for me is showing up consistently whether that’s attending local events, vendor pop-ups, or just engaging on social media with other creatives. Supporting others genuinely has helped build real relationships that turned into collaborations and guidance over time.
Also, don’t underestimate the power of community over competition. Some of the best advice I’ve received has come from fellow event planners and decorators who’ve been through the same challenges.
