Anthony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Story of MDI Prep Learning
I grew up in the Third Ward of Houston, Texas, and while attending Jack Yates High School, I faced one of the greatest challenges of my life—I became homeless during my senior year. The Covenant House of Texas became a lifeline, providing me not only with a place to stay but also with the guidance and support I needed to keep moving forward.
Even in the face of adversity, education always fascinated me. That passion carried me to college, where I earned both a football and academic scholarship. After graduation, I dreamed of becoming a physician, but at the time I doubted myself. I had never personally known an African American physician, and without a role model to guide the way, I chose a different path and became a police officer.
For seven years, I worked in law enforcement, but the desire to study medicine never left me. I remember telling my mother about my dream to go to medical school and my fear that I would be nearly 40 by the time I completed all my training. Her response changed everything: “You’re going to be 40 whether you go to medical school or not.” Encouraged by her wisdom, I followed my heart and was accepted into the University of Texas Houston Medical School.
After earning my medical degree, I discovered my calling in academics—helping the next generation of students achieve their dreams. In 2009, I founded MDI Prep Learning Corp, dedicated to preparing premedical and medical students for success. Since then, we have supported over 1,200 students, with more than 80% matriculating into medical, dental, pharmacy, and graduate schools.
What makes MDI Prep unique is our individualized approach. We don’t just teach content—we focus on each student’s learning style, helping them overcome challenges such as test anxiety, ADHD, and other barriers that can affect performance. In 2015, we expanded beyond pre-health students to assist anyone struggling with high-stakes exams, continuing our mission of empowering learners to succeed through personalized support and mentorship.
From the Third Ward to medical school, and now through MDI Prep, my journey has been a testament to resilience, faith, and the power of education. Our goal remains the same: to help every student who walks through our doors achieve the white coat—or the dream—that once seemed out of reach.
