Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenna Cooper.
Hi Brenna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t grow up planning to become a dog groomer. I actually applied at PetSmart on a whim—just to try something new and see where it led. What started as an apprenticeship quickly turned into a calling. I naturally took to grooming and was fast-tracked through grooming school, realizing early on that this was more than just a job for me—it was something I was genuinely good at and deeply connected to.
In 2020, I left corporate grooming to find my place in the industry. During that time, I experienced firsthand the darker side of it—toxicity, competition instead of community, and a lack of care for both groomers and pets. After being seriously wronged by a former business partner, I reached a breaking point. That experience, while painful, became the final push I needed to choose myself and create something different.
I opened my own one-on-one, kennel-free grooming business with the intention of doing things the right way—for the dogs, the clients, and myself. Building my business from the ground up has been one of the most challenging and rewarding things I’ve ever done. Since opening, I’ve grown stronger relationships with my clients, created a calmer and safer grooming experience for pets, and found a sense of peace and confidence in my work that I never had before.
I’m also a mother of four, and my children have been a huge part of my “why.” They’ve watched me push through personal hardships, rebuild my independence, and show up every day to build a future for our family. At the same time as running my business, I’m a full-time college student pursuing my business degree—because I believe in continuing to grow, learn, and lead by example.
Today, I’m also the founder of a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals restart their lives through skill-based education within the grooming industry. It’s my way of turning my experiences—both the good and the hard—into something that creates opportunity, empowerment, and real change.
My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been intentional. I’ve built a business rooted in compassion, integrity, and independence, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come—and even more excited about where I’m headed.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not been smooth, and starting my business was a major gamble. I truly started from nothing, with nothing—but I also didn’t have the option to fail. I had to make it work for myself and for my children.
Leaving stability behind meant stepping into constant uncertainty—wondering if I would be successful, if clients would trust me, and if the sacrifices would pay off. On top of that, I had to start over and rebuild after being deeply wronged. That experience forced me to regroup emotionally, professionally, and financially.
I put the last of everything I had into building my business—time, energy, tiny bit of savings I had, and a whole lot of faith—while navigating the pressure of providing for my family. There were moments of doubt, exhaustion, and fear, but I kept going because I believed in what I was building and the kind of example I wanted to set for my children.
Those struggles shaped the way I run my business today—with integrity, transparency, and intention. They taught me resilience, self-trust, and the value of creating something rooted in respect and compassion, not survival mode.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is built around intentional, one-on-one, kennel-free grooming that prioritizes the well-being of each dog as an individual. I specialize in low-stress, personalized grooming experiences where pets are never rushed, overbooked, or left sitting in a kennel. Every appointment is tailored, calm, and focused entirely on that dog. I work with all breeds and sizes of dogs, including special needs, anxious, seniors, and those with aggressive tendencies.
What I’m known for is my approach—both with pets and with people. I work closely with clients to understand their dog’s needs, temperament, and comfort level, and I advocate strongly for humane handling, patience, and safety. I also offer creative grooming and specialized services, but never at the expense of a dog’s comfort or trust.
What truly sets my business apart is the environment I’ve created. It’s not transactional—it’s relational. Dogs aren’t treated like numbers, and clients aren’t treated like appointments on a screen. I’ve built a space rooted in respect, transparency, and education, where pet parents feel heard and dogs feel safe.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the reputation I’ve built through consistency and integrity. My clients know exactly what to expect: honest communication, ethical standards, and care that goes beyond the surface. I’ve also worked intentionally to professionalize my business—continuing my education, pursuing my business degree, and building systems that support long-term sustainability rather than burnout.
In addition to my grooming business, I run the Shear Strength Foundation. A nonprofit focused on helping individuals rebuild their lives through skill-based education within the grooming industry. It’s an extension of my values—empowerment, opportunity, and creating access for those who are ready to work but need support.
What I want readers to know most is that my brand stands for doing things differently—and doing them right. It’s proof that you can build a successful business without cutting corners, sacrificing compassion, or losing yourself in the process.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that might surprise people is that I built my business during one of the most uncertain periods of my life. I didn’t wait until everything was stable or comfortable—I started while raising four children, rebuilding after personal and professional setbacks, and figuring things out as I went. What people see now is the result of resilience, not luck.
