Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Watson.
Chelsea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started off as a little girl watching my mom always do her makeup. She actually would only do like eyelashes and maybe a little liner. That’s the route I took. I would put on some lashes and liner and call it a day but I wanted to know more, I wanted to do more. I knew I loved makeup but just couldn’t quite figure it out. I got more into it as a freshman in high school, I learned foundation and eyebrows ( what I thought It was anyway, looking back it was terrible). One day I typed in on YouTube “ how to do eyeshadow. “ The video was very vague and basic I remember it being maybe a Smokey eye, just black and white. From that point on, I would stay up late at night practicing and practicing. Always buying new products testing out different things, also dragging my friends along to be my Guinea pigs lol. 2016 was the year I officially started doing makeup on others. That’s the year I knew, people see my potential. They notice me. They like my work. And from that point on, I knew. I am a Makeup Artist. This is what I want for myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road isn’t always easy. Especially coming up in the game! You have your struggles with clients not showing up, clients cancelling, struggles getting clients.. consistent ones anyway. You lose people during the process because not everybody recognizes you as a “ business woman “ or a “ professional “. They see you as the person they once knew or grew up with. And that’s another challenge within itself but you have to be firm. You have to set boundaries and you have to know your own potential and worth because if you don’t people will run all over you. They will challenge your work, your prices, your knowledge but you have to be firm. Know your worth and don’t settle. Social anxiety has always been a thing for me, which I’m getting out of. I am always afraid of meeting new people/clients. I don’t let that stand in my way though because I know I am bigger than that. You have to get yourself a plan and a purpose and start there. That’s what I did. Realize who and why you’re doing it and that will carry you through those bad days. Anything is possible. My clients are my family! And as long as I have them, I’ll forever keep going no matter how hard it gets down the road.
As you know, we’re big fans of Dollsplay. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m a professional Makeup Artist, and business owner. As of now, I am only known for being a Makeup Artist. My goal is to be more than that. What makes me different from others is my mission is not only makeup oriented but also single mother oriented. I’m working on some ideas right now that will cater to mothers especially when they’re coming to get their makeup done. One of my proud moments? I had been so hard on myself, wanting to quit makeup .. feeling like I didn’t have a purpose following the death of my kid’s dad. One day, a Facebook friend reached out to me because a rapper/artist was coming to town. I didn’t know who she was, what her music was none of that. I had posted the picture on Facebook after doing her makeup and everybody was like “ omg congrats “ I went to go search her up and I was just shocked. Like wow! I got to do an artist’s makeup. I was so proud of myself, it definitely helped me to keep going. Because I know I’ll be doing more and more Artist!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In 5-10 years, I see myself being a multi business owner. As well as a full time MUA! It may sound impossible but anything is possible. I got this far and didn’t think it was possible. I see myself being a provider for my family, someone my community and kids can look up too.I see myself being the one to make it out even with all odds against me. Because believe me, people want to see you fail. I see myself being my best self. When I make it out, giving back to my community ( The east side ) is one of the main things on my to do list! You can never forget you where you come from and I will never forget.
