Inspiring Conversations with Darian Land of Colbert/Ball Tax Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darian Land

Hi Darian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For me, real estate and financial services weren’t just career choices—they were a calling. My journey into entrepreneurship began out of necessity, driven by one of the greatest blessings in my life: my daughter, Londyn. Becoming a mother at a young age was both a challenge and a motivation. The cost of daycare alone made it impossible for me to rely on a traditional 9-to-5 job, forcing me to think outside the box and explore opportunities that would allow me to provide for my daughter while creating a future of financial freedom.

My introduction to real estate came when I started working as an assistant for a real estate agent that is now broker of VillaVue Realty in Dallas. In addition to helping her manage transactions, I ran her loan modification company, assisting families in navigating financial hardships to save their homes. Witnessing the impact of her work was life-changing for me. She wasn’t just selling houses—she was transforming lives, helping people achieve the dream of homeownership. Seeing that kind of influence firsthand lit a fire inside me. I knew real estate was where I was meant to be.

After relocating back to Houston, I took a leap of faith, enrolling in real estate school and earning my license. That was just the beginning. I immersed myself in learning, growing, and positioning myself to serve the very people I once stood alongside—single mothers, first-time homebuyers, and families looking for stability. But as I deepened my expertise, I felt called to do more.

A pivotal moment in my career came when a high school friend approached me about securing her first investment property. That transaction opened my eyes to the world of real estate investing, and I quickly realized the power it held in building generational wealth. One deal led to another, and as I continued to expand my knowledge, doors opened that I never could have imagined. Before I knew it, I was working with investors and developers, helping them navigate the complexities of real estate while building long-term wealth strategies.

In 2023, life took another unexpected turn, leading me to the tax industry. I launched my own franchise with Colbert/Ball Tax Services, diving headfirst into the world of taxation. At first, it was simply an additional stream of income, but as I learned more, I discovered just how powerful tax planning could be in shaping financial success. Now, my expertise allows me to not only help individuals file their taxes but also equip them with the knowledge to make smarter financial decisions for years to come.

With nearly a decade in real estate, my business has now expanded globally. I’ve stepped into the international market, offering investment opportunities in Costa Rica, from land development and condominiums to short- and long-term rental properties. My mission is bigger than just buying and selling—I want to help others build wealth, create legacies, and break financial barriers.

Looking back, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without faith and family. God has been at the center of every step, guiding me toward opportunities I never saw coming. And my children—Londyn and Amir—have been my greatest motivation, pushing me to go further than I ever thought possible.

I’m living proof that when you trust God’s plan, stay committed to growth, and embrace the challenges life throws your way, you can turn obstacles into steppingstones. My journey is far from over, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to success has been anything but smooth. Financial hardships have been a major part of my journey—funding my business, keeping up with real estate and tax office fees, and learning how to sustain and scale without a financial safety net. There were times when I reinvested everything I had, leaving myself with little to nothing. Some years, I didn’t make a profit at all. But every year, I learned something valuable that helped me grow into the space I’m in now.

One of the hardest lessons was understanding the importance of saving and investing wisely. When you’re building a business from the ground up, every dollar matters. I had to learn how to manage cash flow, budget for slow seasons, and make strategic investments to keep my business moving forward. I truly went broke funding my vision, but I never let that stop me.

The biggest lesson? Faith. God carried me through my darkest storms and taught me that success isn’t just about money—it’s about endurance, patience, and trusting the process. The seeds I planted, even when I felt like I had nothing left to give, are now growing beyond what I could have imagined.

So to anyone chasing a dream—know that the struggle is real, but so is the reward. God will fund your vision if you stay committed. Learn while you can, and when you can. The earlier you start, the better. I built this from nothing, and if I can do it, so can you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

I’m most proud of the impact my business has had on others. How do you think about luck?
Some would say I had bad luck—having children at a young age, facing financial struggles, and constantly being forced to pivot. But looking back, I see that what the world called setbacks were really setups for something greater.

I didn’t plan to get into real estate or the tax business. My journey started out of necessity. As a young mother, I couldn’t afford daycare, so I had to find a way to provide for my children while still being present for them. That led me to real estate, where I started as an assistant and quickly fell in love with the business of helping families achieve homeownership. I saw firsthand how real estate could change lives, and I knew I was meant to do more than just work a job—I was called to create opportunities for others.

Years later, another unexpected turn led me to the tax industry. Life threw its challenges, and once again, I had to pivot. Instead of seeing it as another obstacle, I embraced it as another door God was opening. I launched my own tax franchise, not just as a business, but as a way to educate and empower people financially.

What felt like detours were actually God’s way of leading me to my purpose. His plan was bigger than my own. If I hadn’t faced those struggles, I wouldn’t be where I am today—helping others build wealth through real estate, financial literacy, and tax strategies. What I thought was “bad luck” was really divine redirection, and for that, I am forever grateful.
