Hi Eric, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, in 2007, my wife, Latoya Joseph, and I were presented with the opportunity to purchase a cleaning franchise. Through this endeavor, we acquired knowledge of the business and worked successfully with the franchise for 11 years. However, we consistently felt constrained by the franchise’s practices, which we deemed unfair, and the presence of favoritism. After careful consideration, I decided to part ways with the franchise, which led to a tumultuous legal battle. Ultimately, we lost the franchise and were compelled to establish our own business, Easy Clean Janitorial LLC, in 2018, taking a leap of faith.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The inception of our business was extremely challenging. As young entrepreneurs, I, 28 years old, and my wife, Latoya, 23 years old, lacked experience in owning or operating a business. My background was in the streets, while Latoya’s was in the nursing field, so we were unfamiliar with the inner workings of a business. Initially, our franchise did not generate significant revenue; our first check was a mere $200. However, after attending cleaning conventions and witnessing others’ success, I became determined to understand the industry. Over time, we achieved remarkable success, and many family members and friends followed in our footsteps, seeking advice on establishing their own cleaning businesses. We became one of the top franchises in the region. Nevertheless, after a legal battle with franchise Easy Clean Janitorial LLC was formed in 2018, we faced new challenges, having to restart from scratch without buildings, employees, or infrastructure. During this period, I was recovering from hip and knee surgery, and my wife was pregnant with our daughter, Eriana. Despite the mounting pressure and whispers that our success was solely due to the franchise, we persevered through prayer, faith, and determination. Ultimately, we managed to grow our business exponentially, surpassing our previous achievements with the franchise.
