Inspiring Conversations with Erika Paz of Erika Paz – Therapist with Headway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Paz.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Erika Paz, an immigrant from Brazil. I am an author, psychotherapist, and wounded healer.
My path to becoming a therapist is deeply personal. Like many people who are drawn to this work, I didn’t arrive here by accident—I arrived through lived experience. I’ve faced my own mental health challenges, which gave me a firsthand understanding of how overwhelming life can feel when you’re struggling and how powerful it is to feel truly seen and supported.

Those experiences sparked a desire in me to help others not just survive difficult seasons but grow through them. I pursued my education and clinical training with a strong focus on compassionate, evidence-based care, and over time I worked with individuals, families, and children facing anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and emotional regulation challenges.

Eventually, I founded my private practice in Texas to create the kind of therapeutic space I once needed myself—one that is collaborative, non-judgmental, and deeply human. Today, I provide online psychotherapy across Texas, working with clients from diverse backgrounds and life stages. I’m especially passionate about helping people build resilience, strengthen relationships, and reconnect with their own inner strengths.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road—and I don’t believe meaningful journeys ever are. One of the most challenging and humbling experiences came in 2024, when my son struggled with depression. As both a mother and a therapist, this was a profound reminder that mental health does not discriminate and that knowledge alone doesn’t make you immune to pain.

Navigating that season required me to slow down, listen deeply, and practice the very compassion and patience I encourage in my clients. Writing became one of my ways of coping and processing. Out of that experience, I wrote a book on positive parenting—not as a manual of perfection, but as a reflection of what truly helps families stay connected, resilient, and hopeful during difficult times.

That period reinforced my belief that healing is not linear and that growth often comes from our most vulnerable moments. It shaped me not only as a parent, but as a therapist—deepening my empathy, strengthening my commitment to families, and reminding me that even in the hardest seasons, something meaningful can emerge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about our city—and Texas overall—is the sense of belonging. As an immigrant, I truly feel naturalized as a Texan. The people are welcoming, resilient, and community-oriented, and once you try Texas BBQ, you never go back—it’s simply unmatched.

What I like least is the heat—but that comes with an asterisk. I’m originally from a very hot climate, so I can handle it, but I’ve definitely been spoiled by Texas’s mild winters. After enjoying those cooler months, the summer heat feels a little more intense—but still worth it for everything this city offers.
