Inspiring Conversations with Glenda Newman of LatinasRun

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenda Newman.

Hi Glenda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I wish I had a perfectly curated story about my relationship with running. I’d love to tell you that I am a natural-born runner, but that is simply not the case. I almost passed out the first time I attempted to run the loop at Memorial Park. The only thing that hurt more than my lungs was my ego! All the runners around me seemed like they were having fun, but I felt like I was about to pass out! However, I was determined to run a marathon, and I wasn’t going to let anything get in my way! I completed my first marathon in 2015, took a long hiatus after the birth of my daughter, and ran my second marathon in 2019. I called it my “comeback” run, and I haven’t looked back since!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I find it difficult to wake up early for Saturday long runs, so I try to prepare in advance as much as possible! Rest and preparation can go a long way and even help me get a few minutes of extra sleep!

We’ve been impressed with LatinasRun – Houston, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
LatinasRun is a running club for everyone! Our hope is to remove the notion that runners have a certain”look”, or even body type, but rather approach running as an experience. We hope to help others thrive through community, and encouragement. We meet up every other Tuesday at 6:15 at lululemon in City Centre! Join us!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Your running journey should be just that: YOURS! Be gentle with yourself, especially if you are new to the sport. I wish I would have started running with friends sooner. Making friends as an adult can be challenging, but there are countless of run clubs in the Houston area who can’t wait to meet you! Be sure to hydrate before, during and after the run. Most importantly: have fun!
