Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Laird.
Hi Grace, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first became interested in photography during college. At the time, it was just an occasional hobby—something I enjoyed while traveling or spending time with friends. After we had our first daughter and life slowed down, I stepped away from my full-time work as a Nurse Practitioner. That’s when I really began picking up the camera more intentionally, wanting to capture all the sweet moments of our growing family. As I spent more time behind the lens, I started learning more about photography and began exploring my creativity through images. My husband, who’s also handy with a camera, offered helpful feedback on composition and technique. I began doing free sessions—family shoots, branding sessions, and experimenting with different photography niches. Over time, I naturally gravitated toward interior design and architectural photography.
Around the time I was considering turning this passion into a career, my sister-in-law, Ashley Moore of Moore House Interiors, texted me: “I made you an Instagram account! I want you to be my photographer!” And just like that, we were sitting around a cafe table after my first shoot looking at the results. That was nearly ten years ago. With Ashley’s trust and the opportunities she gave me, I was able to build my portfolio, refine my creative process and start taking on clients. And that’s how I got here, in a nutshell. I’m so incredibly thankful for the people who believed in me—even before I fully believed in myself.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With no formal training in photography, I had to learn everything from the ground up—and then refine that knowledge specifically for interiors. Interior and architectural photography come with a steep learning curve, from understanding lighting and composition to managing the specific gear requirements and necessary upgrades. I’m not a highly technical photographer; I tend to rely a lot on intuition and feel. So, learning the technical side and integrating it into my natural shooting style was one of the biggest adjustments. Editing, in particular, is incredibly detail-oriented, and it took me a couple of years to really develop my editing style and process.
I have always believed in community over competition, and I emailed and messaged with some photographers who inspired me when I first started—several were willing to answer my questions and support me as I grew. Two of whom I will always look up to, Emily Followill and Kerry Kirk, had a significant impact on my career, and I am forever grateful for their support!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Grace Laird Photography?
I specialize in interior design and architectural photography, creating editorial-quality images for interior designers, architects, and builders. My goal is to capture each space in its truest form—to tell the story behind the design and the intention woven into every detail of the finished home. A strong image should draw the viewer in, evoke a sense of place, and highlight the design elements with purpose. I rely on instinct while shooting; if something feels off in-camera, I pause and reassess.
This approach consistently results in images that not only showcase my clients’ work but also help them connect with prospective clients and grow their portfolios and businesses. Over the past 10 years, as my work has evolved, I’ve been honored to be featured in several shelter publications, the Houston Chronicle, and two design books.
I often photograph the exteriors of larger projects and have recently begun exploring landscape and garden photography. Being outdoors has always been something I love, and capturing the architectural elements within natural landscapes is a new and exciting direction that I’m truly enjoying so far.
What were you like growing up?
I was a complete tomboy growing up. With two older brothers, I was always right behind them—fishing in Buffalo Bayou, hunting, riding bikes, and playing baseball in the front yard. I didn’t own anything pink until I became a mom to three wonderful girls. I was usually shy until I felt comfortable with the people around me, and since we spent most of our time outdoors, that’s where my interests naturally developed. I played sports—softball and soccer—and also played the cello through high school. I never really saw myself as a creative, though I wrote quite a bit when I was younger—dramatic poems and short musings—and I’ve always loved reading classic literature. Photography surprised me. It wasn’t something I expected to fall into, but once I did, it felt like the most natural fit.
