Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerie Walker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Several years ago, while planning my wedding I started making purchases for the wedding. I realized I had so many things that others could use. Those purchases became my first venture, Alpha Stylez Event Rentals. When I started renting I was asked numerous times could I refer a caterer. I use to cater with my aunt who had a wedding business. Hence, my answer was yes. Consequently, Crystal Jewel Charcuterie and Catering was born. What I realized once I started was how much I enjoyed cooking and creating displays of food. Food is a love language for me, a source of pleasure.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is rarely smooth. However, when you love what you do, you make it through.
I have learned through trial and error. When starting a business, always be prepared and mindful. Put yourself in the shoes of your customer. Be prepared for accidents. In my case: in the kitchen, on the road and at the venue. I have learned to have more, than less.
Events can be stressful; be reassuring, be accommodating and be patient. Have a plan A, B and C. You have to think on your feet.
Make sure that you have some form of a contract, different avenues for payment, and a policy as it relates to refunds. Protect yourself and protect your customers.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
CJC offers catering services for any event: weddings, baby showers, birthdays, engagements, brunches, etc … We provide full meals, small bites, charcuterie, grazing tables and desserts.
We have just expanded to boat cruises out of Kemah, Texas. We provide charcuterie, small bites and drinks.
We are able to decorate and accommodate your event based on your needs.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I have always been a creative person. My mother, Marie Creal, was a teacher and she promoted my individuality and creativity. She made sure I had the tools to grow. She was very supportive of self expression.
At an early age, as a single parent, I would have to go to work with her on the weekends. She was a wedding director for my aunt, Darlene Smith. My mother did so much more. She catered, set up and decorated. I was there for it all and I was Mommy’s little helper.
My grandmother, Pauline Dotson, worked at a cafe. As most matriarchs, she was the family cook. When I was not learning from my mother I was learning from my grandmother.
I did not think I would do this as an adult. I always assumed I would have a 9 to 5. What I know now is we are a sum of our experiences. I had three very strong women that helped nurture and form who I am. I am blessed because of them. I learned a business and did not even recognize it as such.
All of these women helped me to be strong, creative and unafraid to stand on my own. I am very vocal and I try to be the voice when others need it. I am loving, caring and giving. I try to be all of that for my family, friends and customers.
