Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Talamantez.
Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, I was a very curious child with a deep desire to help others while carrying my own anxiety that went unnamed until early adulthood. I recall this natural draw to understand people and why we feel what we feel and how we learn to navigate, grow, and connect. That curiosity led me to explore many career paths early on, each one teaching me something new, until my fascination with the brain and human behavior continued to stand out.
Determined to turn that curiosity into meaningful work, I did what was necessary to pursue my education in therapy while working full time as a teacher. In the classroom, I found a natural connection with teens, particularly those navigating complex emotions and life circumstances, which unfortunately occurred all too often. This led me to create a teen processing group at the alternative school where I taught, which became another turning point that solidified my calling and reaffirmed the impact of holding space for others. Upon graduation, I joined group practices so that I could jump right into helping others.
During the uncertainty of COVID, I took a leap of faith and opened my own private practice, guided by a desire to be more accessible and available during a time of profound struggle and isolation. Since then, I have continued to listen closely, to my clients, to my community, and to myself, seeking out areas of need and aligning them with my scope, strengths, and passions. My work remains rooted in the same values that shaped me early on: curiosity, compassion, and a genuine commitment to helping others feel understood and supported.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It can be difficult to fully name the struggles, because my perspective left little room for doubt, thanks in part to my ADHD sprinkles, which often support this outlook. Stress accumulates, and there are moments when anxiety gets the best of me, but beneath it all, there has been a steady belief that I will figure it out, one way or another. Rather than allowing obstacles to tear me down or pull me away from my goals, I learned to move through them, trusting my ability to adapt, problem-solve, and keep moving.
One notable challenge was being a first-generation college student. Navigating this path was definitely an adventure with plenty of stressful moments from constant research, all while sitting with uncertainty and hoping I was making the right choices. My curiosity—and yes, my anxiety—helped me ask countless questions, which eventually led to the “right” questions and guided me through a long process of trial and error.
Along the way, I also learned the importance of slowing down while working full time and attending graduate school. This period challenged me to reprogram my expectations and adopt a pace that no longer fed chaos or chronic stress. This mindset has shaped not only how I navigate challenges, but also how I show up for others in their own moments of uncertainty.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Cardinal Counseling was named with intention, inspired by the symbolism of the cardinal bird. Cardinals are often associated with rebirth, connection—to oneself, to loved ones, and to those we have lost—along with hope and resilience. I wanted my practice to reflect these meanings and serve as a space for healing and renewal.
I am a deeply spiritual, creative, and empathetic person who values lifelong learning and continual growth. My approach to therapy is always evolving as I seek the most effective and compassionate ways to support others. At Cardinal Counseling, I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma, with a particular specialty in treating insomnia. Sleep is essential to our overall well-being, yet it is often one of the first things disrupted by stress, mood changes, and life experiences. When I recognized how limited resources were for sleep and insomnia, I went searching for answers. Along the way, I became even more determined and motivated to be part of the solution for those struggling with sleep, especially individuals already navigating stress and emotional dysregulation. I am honored to have received extensive training through Stanford University’s Health and Insomnia Program (SHIP), followed by heavy consultation to build efficient and well practiced approaches utilizing CBT-I.
I also utilize a powerful yet gentle technique known as Brainspotting. As a certified Brainspotting therapist, I have witnessed profound healing as clients access deeper mind–body processing and experience meaningful somatic release when exploring anxiety, depression, grief and past trauma.
Working together as a team, I help clients explore their values which drive them, gain insight into the patterns and programs their brains follow, and develop skills to rewire, cope, and build compassion for the challenges they face. I also bring a fun, quirky style to my work; one that reflects my commitment of showing up fully and authentically. I currently work with children, teens, and adults ages 10 and up.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I could not imagine a better place to live and work. While I am a world traveler and have experienced many incredible places, I have no desire to leave the Houston area in which I was born and raised. The Woodlands, in particular, has become a truly special community, one that values safety, connection, and the creation of meaningful experiences, all while maintaining a beautiful natural environment, which I connect to and appreciate.
Additionally, the “helper” community in The Woodlands, consisting of therapists, social workers, psychologists, and many psychiatrists, is truly incredible. I’ve witnessed firsthand how most are able to come together to network, connect, and build resources, all with the shared goal of better supporting our clients and serving the broader community.
While this area is truly amazing and always growing, if I’m being honest, the traffic that comes with growth can be challenging for many of us. On top of the expected challenge, having such a desirable place to call home can understandably lead some community members to also feel protective of it. While this isn’t a negative, it can occasionally create a sense of division. Even so, my appreciation for this community continues to grow, and I’m grateful to live and work in a place that so many people care deeply about. I also hold a quiet, personal goal: to spread love and gently bridge the divides, one friend or client at a time.
