Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Rodriguez MD.
Hi Joel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Dr. Jose Esteban Rodriguez and his son Dr. Joel Esteban Rodriguez are the physicians of Orthopaedic Institute for Spinal Disorders. This family private practice also involves Dr. Jose’s oldest son, Dr. Limael Esteban Rodriguez, who is a Vascular Surgeon and started Texas Vascular & Imaging. All three physicians did their medical school training at Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Dr. Jose started OISD in 1992 and has been an important figure for the community of West Houston ever since.
As a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and Spine Specialist he has 40+ years of experience treating all areas of the orthopedic anatomy. As a native Puerto Rican, he has been very influential for the Hispanic community of Greater Houston, even serving as past president of the Hispanic American Medical Association of Houston. When he’s not spending time at the office, operating room or with his family, Dr. Jose is out enjoying his favorite hobbies, including rowing, remote control airplanes and bonsai cultivating.
Dr. Joel is Board Certified Family Medicine physician and Primary Care Sports Medicine. He joined OISD in 2024 and has 5+ years practicing in Houston. Dr. Joel has a diverse training history including a Master’s in Aerospace physiology & health at King’s College in London, UK, followed by Houston Methodist Hospital Family Medicine residency program and then Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at Christus Santa Rosa in San Antonio. He has experience doing non-surgical care for athletes of all ages along with professional athletes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The challenges of training to practice medicine are extensive. Costs, licensure, exams, complications, lawsuits, health insurance denials are just a few I can think of. For OISD, the practice has survived >30 years through hard work, good patient outcomes and referrals from a vast network in Houston.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
High-quality medical care is the number one priority at Orthopaedic Institute For Spinal Disorders in Houston.
Our team practice advanced general orthopaedics with a specialization in spine and neck procedures. The team provides the most current and least invasive treatments available whenever possible.
We take care of all sports medicine conditions including sprains, strains, tendonitis, neck and back pain, arthritis, herniated discs, and scoliosis. Pain is often a major concern for patients dealing with back conditions, and the team works one-on-one with each patient to develop a plan that aids in pain control and improves quality of life. If surgery is necessary, minimally invasive treatments are available, whether for an arthroscopy, laminectomy or spinal fusion. OISD is an advanced orthopaedic practice that also provides expert care for arthritis, including ultrasound guided injections and joint replacement.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
We are always teaching medical students including those graduating from University of Houston College of Medicine. We teach the young physicians of the future to always practice evidence based medicine, use ethical approaches to patient care and plan for the future as the medical and political systems continues to change.
