Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Parker.
Hi Kaitlyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Throughout school, I always loved reading and writing and knew I wanted to stay as far away from complex math subjects as possible. In my later years of college, I started a blog and knew I wanted to write for a living but I had no idea how to make that a reality. I dreamt of being a journalist or an editor at a lifestyle magazine. After working as an Account Manager for a recruiting firm after graduation and then later working for lululemon, I learned a lot about sales, branding, and marketing. I fell in love with it and knew I wanted to combine my love of writing with those subjects. Enter: learning about the discipline of copywriting during grad school.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d say it’s been a steady road. A little winding and bumpy at times, with a fair bit of doubt, worry, comparison, and overwhelm along the way.
I’ve been through so many iterations of my personal blog and then later my business before really landing on what today is Copy Uncorked. I did start my business as a side hustle and I strongly believe that allowed me the time for trial, error & discovery along the way. It grew slowly but steadily and eventually gave me the confidence I needed to take it full-time.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Copy Uncorked is a boutique copywriting and brand strategy studio pouring up personality-fueled sales copy for rising creative entrepreneurs and industry-leading brands. Our approach is immersive, personalized, hospitable, and layered with story. We take the big picture of a client’s brand into account while being adamant about every last word and detail of their messaging + copy. We’re also big proponents of perfectly paired copy and design so that’s always an important component of our projects as we work alongside some of the best designers out there.
I’m proud of how intentional we are about the responsibility to truly differentiate each brand and help them land on a clear message and engaging brand voice that not only feels aligned to their values but resonates with the right people.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I would say the importance of really taking care of yourself as a business owner/entrepreneur. We were fortunate to have a steady workload, given that what we do can be fully executed remotely and without needing in-person contact. So many brands took advantage of the opportunity to work on their own brands during the shut-downs so we actually saw a spike in leads. However, that also led to overworking at times and running myself down in early 2021. It wasn’t a fun experience. Since then, I’ve been determined to remain mindful of my own wellness, build out a solid team/micro-agency, and not push for success at any cost. I love helping people and I can do that best when I’m rested, inspired, and able to be fully present.
