Inspiring Conversations with Maki Drollinger of Pro Relief Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maki Drollinger.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and was a middle-distance runner from junior high through college. My undergraduate degree is in Physical Education, and I have always been interested in human anatomy. At the age of 23, I came to the U.S. and pursued my career as a chiropractor. I always dreamed about having my own clinic, and I am happy to say that I finally have!

My motivation is to help relieve patients’ pain, promote well-being, and increase productivity in life. I am also the only Japanese chiropractor in Houston, and I hope to use my services to help the Japanese community here.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I am reflecting on the journey of opening my practice in late 2019, just before the pandemic lockdown began in early 2020. That was a very tough year for a new practice owner; being unable to treat patients and having no income presented significant challenges. Despite the hardships, I made it through, and here I am today! Looking back, my business has experienced small ups and downs, but overall, I genuinely enjoy what I do. I truly appreciate all the patients who trust me as their healthcare provider.

As you know, we’re big fans of Pro Relief Chiropractic. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Many people assume chiropractic care focuses solely on spinal adjustments. While those are important, I understand that muscles are crucial for movement and alignment, making the treatment of muscle disorders key to relieving musculoskeletal pain.

I am a Certified Provider of Active Release Techniques (ART), a distinction held by only eight chiropractors in the Houston area. This advanced soft tissue therapy treats pain in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves.

My treatment process includes an examination followed by targeted therapy that combines practitioner pressure with specific range-of-motion movements, aiming to restore muscular range of motion, reduce scar tissue, and decrease musculoskeletal pain. I dedicate at least 40 minutes to each patient to ensure a tailor-made treatment.

I also offer dry needling, a Western acupuncture technique targeting tight muscles.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I enjoy interacting with each unique patient every day, as it provides me with rewarding experiences.

I especially appreciate the opportunity to help elderly people with joint pain or postoperative patients, as well as young athletes recovering from ongoing injuries who want to improve or fine-tune their bodies to reach higher competition levels.

They appreciate what I do for their condition, and I am grateful that they consistently refer their friends and family members.
