Inspiring Conversations with Maria Chevez of BAGHAUS Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Chevez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m from Argentina. I came to the USA 8 years ago with my family, my husband Federico, and our sons Cedric (22) and Hidalgo (17). In my country, I taught and coordinated both courses, one was “Architectural Design” and “Visual Communication” at the school of architecture of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, FAU UNLP, in the capital of the province of Buenos Aires, for more than 20 years. I had my own company to make models for architecture firms. Arts and crafts were in my life since I was born. Both my parents were teachers and artists, and it was crucial for my education. I am passionate about all things I do.

In 2015, I create BAGHAUS upcycling design company when I received fabric trimmings and leather scraps from a sophisticated interior design company in Houston, Texas. As an architect, I immediately saw the possibilities for “upcycling” and reducing landfill waste. I transform formerly discarded materials into attractive and functional designs. Each casual bag and stylish clutch, with its own unique textures and colors show the rigorous attention to detail I pour into all my creations. In addition, I’m an independent art curator. I had an art gallery at Sawyer yards for almost two years between 2018 and 2020, but I still am an art dealer, representing amazing artists from Argentina, Uruguay, and different countries as well.

Today, I am so excited to start a master’s degree in architecture, MSA, at the University of Houston. Also, I am looking to grow my business because I deeply believe in the sustainable concept of upcycling.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Everything is different and new in a different country and culture. One of my big challenges was to learn English as an adult and, at the same time, learn about business. However, I have enjoyed each step in my life. I am very curious, sociable, and optimistic.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about BAGHAUS Corporation?

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In the beginning, I went to find a mentor in Score Mentors, a non-profit organization here in Houston. In addition, I stopped by a lot of networking events I could. But the best pieces of advice I received are from my clients and friends. I love to listen to them because they are loyal, authentic, and provide a different point of view.
