Inspiring Conversations with Matthew Conner of Arete Public Affairs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Conner.

Hi Matthew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey in a small, hardworking family where financial challenges were a constant presence. Those early experiences taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance. After high school, I moved to Texas and initially pursued a different career path, working in various roles before realizing that my true calling was in public service. This led me to earn a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Houston, where I developed a deep passion for politics and government relations.

After completing my degree, I made the pivot from campaign work to official public service, taking roles with U.S. Representative Michael McCaul and U.S. Senator John Cornyn, where I gained firsthand experience navigating the complexities of government relations. I later served as Director of Government Relations for Houston Independent School District (HISD), the largest school district in Texas, helping secure millions in funding for critical programs.

Building on this experience, I founded Arete Public Affairs, where I now lead a team that provides strategic business development, lobbying, and advocacy for clients in sectors like education, energy, transportation, infrastructure, and animal welfare. Throughout my career, I’ve always been driven by a commitment to making a tangible impact through strategic advocacy, helping clients navigate complex public policy issues, and creating positive outcomes.

My career path has been shaped by the lessons I learned early on in life and the opportunities that have allowed me to grow in public service. Today, I continue to be inspired by the support of my family—my wife Fiorella and our two children, George and Hannah—who encourage me every day to stay focused on the goal of serving my community and driving meaningful change.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. Growing up in a family that faced financial hardship, I learned early on the importance of resilience, perseverance, and hard work. Those experiences taught me how to make the most out of what little we had, and they shaped my commitment to service and leadership.

When I moved to Texas, I initially pursued a different career, but over time, I realized that my true passion was in public service. Transitioning into political science and government relations was not an easy shift, but it was a turning point that opened new doors and opportunities.

Along the way, I faced many challenges—navigating complex political landscapes and managing competing priorities—but each of those challenges pushed me to grow and become more effective in my work. I’ve learned that setbacks are part of the journey, and how you respond to them is what ultimately defines success.

The struggles I faced growing up, combined with the challenges I’ve encountered in my professional life, have been essential to shaping my approach to leadership. They continue to motivate me to work toward making a meaningful, lasting impact in my community.

We’ve been impressed with Arete Public Affairs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
