Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Self.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career in education as an elementary school teacher. I absolutely loved working with kids, but I found my favorite and most meaningful parts of the day were when I got to hear about my student’s lives and build deeper connections with them. This led me to get my Master’s Degree in Counseling. My heart has always been in education, so I continued to work as a school counselor for 6 years, getting to meet and help kids from so many different backgrounds. As I worked, I began to see how healing playing could be, and this led me to go into private practice in 2021 and eventually become a Registered Play Therapist. Finally, in 2023, I achieved a lifelong dream of opening my own practice, Reflect Therapy. I now have the best job ever, getting to work with children, tweens, teens, and their families using play therapy and EMDR to help them find a joyful life
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was a big leap to open my own practice, and took a lot of courage and belief in myself! We have not yet been open a year, so every day, I learn something new about managing a small business. But I consider myself so lucky to get to be a play therapist and have the freedom to build my practice the way I want.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Reflect Therapy?
Play Therapy is the best approach for working with children in therapy because it helps them express feelings that they may not be able to verbalize or understand due to developmental age. It’s engaging and fun for kids and they learn so many great skills while getting to play! Play therapy is even helpful for tweens and teens who do like to talk. We might make slime, bracelets, or just toss a ball around, and it can provide stress relief while we process feelings and problems.
As a practice, our motto at Reflect Therapy is, “You belong here. Yes, you.” because we are a down-to-earth and welcoming group practice, you will feel like you belong the moment you walk into our waiting room. We have three therapists, including myself, that specialize in individuals across the life span, from young children to older adults. We take a very intentional and personalized approach to therapy, tailoring our services to each client’s individual needs instead of just a one-size-fits-all. Along with myself offering play therapy, parent consulting, and EMDR, we also have Lauren, who specializes in teens, young adults, and anxiety, and Shari, who specializes in high-achieving professionals, EMDR, adults, and people wanting to overcome difficult pasts to succeed in life. We offer a free 15-minute consultation for anyone who’d like to chat with us and see if we might be a good fit for them or their family!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I work individually with children, tweens, and teen clients, but I also offer parent consulting for parents who’d like to get a bit more support around issues in their life- because, as a parent myself, I know that parenting can be challenging! As a former educator, I have also presented at several schools on topics like bullying, stress, and parenting skills, and I love creating engaging speaking presentations for groups.
If you’d like to work with me or any of the other therapists at our practice, people can call, email, or schedule a free consultation through our website, www.reflecthouston.com
