Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Mburu.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I left traditional primary care because I couldn’t look my patients in the eye anymore.
Not because I stopped caring but because I cared too much to keep pretending 15 minutes was enough. I had patients coming in exhausted, gaining weight they couldn’t explain, hormones completely off, telling me they hadn’t felt like themselves in years. And I had exactly enough time to order a lab, write a prescription, and schedule a follow-up I already knew wouldn’t be enough. I was processing people. That’s not medicine. That’s a conveyor belt.
So I walked away. From the stability, from the system, from everything that was “supposed” to make sense and I built Sollie Health & Wellness from the ground up in Spring, Texas. A place where I actually have time to sit down, look you in the eye, and ask how you’re *really* doing. Where your chart isn’t a list of problems to manage. It’s a story I’ve actually read. Where you don’t leave with a pamphlet and a prayer. You leave with a plan.
The patients who walk through our door have usually been somewhere else first. They’ve been told their labs are “normal” when something clearly isn’t. They’ve been rushed, dismissed, or handed a diagnosis without an explanation. Some of them cry in the first appointment. Not because anything bad happened but because someone finally listened. That never gets old. And it’s exactly why I’m never going back.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? No. Worth it? Every single day.
The hardest part wasn’t leaving, it was the silence after. When you walk away from a salary, from a system that tells you you’re supposed to be grateful just to have a seat at the table, you spend a lot of nights wondering if you made the right call. There’s no HR department when you’re the owner. No one to call when the EMR goes down, the lab system has an error, and a patient is waiting – all at the same time. You figure it out. You have to.
Building trust in a new community is slower than anyone tells you. You can have the best care in the city and still have people drive right past your door because they don’t know your name yet. People have been burned before by providers who didn’t listen, by systems that failed them, by clinics that looked good on paper and felt cold in person. Earning that trust isn’t a marketing strategy. It’s showing up, consistently, and letting your patients do the talking. Our Google reviews aren’t from an ad campaign. They’re from people who felt something different here and wanted someone else to find us too.
And honestly? The loneliness of entrepreneurship is real. There are days when you are the provider, the administrator, the marketer, the problem solver, and the person holding it together for everyone else. All before noon. Nobody prepares you for that. But then a patient sends you a message that says their energy is back, their labs are the best they’ve ever been, they feel like themselves again, and you remember exactly why you blew up the plan.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sollie Health and Wellness ?
Sollie Health & Wellness is a functional medicine and direct primary care (DPC) clinic in Spring, Texas, and those two things together are rarer than they should be.
Functional medicine means we ask why. Not just what’s wrong, but why it’s wrong and what’s driving it. Most of our patients have already been somewhere else. They’ve been told their labs are normal when something clearly isn’t. They’ve been handed a prescription without an explanation. They’ve spent years managing symptoms without anyone ever looking for the root cause. That stops here.
Direct primary care is the model that makes it possible. No insurance middleman. No 15-minute appointments. No waiting three weeks to be seen. Our members get everything a traditional primary care provider offers — annual wellness visits, chronic disease management, urgent and sick visits, prescriptions, referrals, and discounted imaging — plus same and next day access and 24/7 direct messaging with their provider, for one flat monthly rate. Primary care the way it was always meant to work, before insurance turned medicine into a billing exercise.
Together, functional medicine and DPC give patients something most have never had — a provider with the time and the tools to actually think about you. Your hormones, your metabolism, your energy, your life. Not just today’s complaint. Your whole health story.
We offer testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for men, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) for women, GLP-1 medical weight loss, NAD+ therapy, and peptide therapy – all rooted in the same philosophy. Find the cause. Treat the whole person.
We’ve built something real here in Spring, Texas and the community has noticed. We’re one of the most reviewed functional medicine and direct primary care clinics in the Spring and Woodlands area, with patients who drive past every other option to get here. That’s not marketing. That’s trust, earned one appointment at a time.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Start before you’re ready. The perfect moment isn’t coming.
Learn the business side early. I was trained to be a great clinician but nobody trained me to negotiate a lease, run payroll, and manage social media in the same week. That learning curve will humble you fast. Get ahead of it.
And protect your energy like it’s a clinical resource, because it is. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Build boundaries into the foundation, not as an afterthought.
The work is hard. It is also the most meaningful thing I have ever done. If it’s calling you, answer it.
