Inspiring Conversations with Sakara Ross of SNR Construction & Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sakara Ross.

Hi Sakara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
SNR Construction is a family-owned business inspired by my grandfather Finley L. Ross who was a carpenter in the late 1940s. I started the company with my father Carl Ross around December 2016 with hopes of creating a family legacy in honor of my Grandfather. In January 2017 my father unexpectedly passed away leaving me as the single owner of the company. Initially, my role was solely on the administrative side of the business. Losing my father in the early building stages forced me to take on all aspects of the company. I began by getting my company certified with the City of Houston Office of Business opportunity. Getting MWBE and SBE certifications with the City of Houston allowed me to receive solicitations for projects and has led to many opportunities in the city and surrounding areas.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road, but it definitely builds character. In the early stages, business capital was a struggle. I remember winning my first contract with HISD painting schools that were damaged during Hurricane Harvey. There was a tremendous amount of work to be done in a short amount of time. I had to figure out how to purchase materials and make a payroll of 20k while waiting to be paid in 60 days. I hadn’t really established any business credit so I was forced to empty my savings in order to float this project. As my company has grown and gotten more established, working capital can still be a challenge because I now go after even larger projects.

We’ve been impressed with SNR Construction & Consulting, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a Houston-based Minority Woman-owned construction company that provides residential & multifamily new construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation, project management, and estimating services. Working in conjunction with local and federal Housing Authorities, we build energy-efficient, high-quality affordable homes that exceed building codes and create remarkable communities.
