Today we’d like to introduce you to Samer Salama.
Hi Samer, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The Yum Bites story starts with my daughter Maya, back in 2nd grade, when she was given a class project: dream up your own business. Maya, who has always had a serious sweet tooth, didn’t want to do just any business — she wanted to build a cookie company. But not one that sold ordinary chocolate chip or sugar cookies. She wanted to create flavors nobody had ever tasted before — combinations you’d never find on a regular store shelf.
She poured her personality into every detail. Pink and blue, her favorite colors, became the brand’s signature palette. During art class, she sketched a cookie, half-eaten, as if someone couldn’t resist taking a bite before it even made it to the counter — and that sketch became the Yum Bites logo.
What started as a school assignment didn’t stay a school assignment. Two years later, Maya turned her idea into something real. She began baking her one-of-a-kind cookies for family and friends, and it didn’t take long before word got around. People kept coming back for more, and their enthusiasm pushed her to keep experimenting — dreaming up new flavor combinations and recipes to surprise and delight every customer’s palate.
That spirit is exactly what shaped our company’s mission today: Not your average cookie.
Got a wild cookie idea in mind? You’ve come to the right place — Yum Bites was built for exactly that.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle has been time. I work full-time as an IT manager for a consulting company, and that role comes with its own demanding schedule — long hours, tight deadlines, and unpredictable days. Trying to balance that with running Yum Bites has easily been the toughest part of this journey.
Baking isn’t something you can rush — good cookies take patience, testing, and attention to detail, and fulfilling orders requires just as much care, from prepping ingredients to packaging each order so it arrives perfect. Finding time to do all of that on top of a full-time career has meant a lot of early mornings, late nights, and weekends spent in the kitchen instead of relaxing. It’s a constant juggling act, but seeing customers enjoy something Maya and I created together makes every late night worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of Yum Bites. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Yum Bites isn’t just a business — it’s a father-daughter journey. Watching Maya take an idea from a classroom worksheet to something customers genuinely love has been one of the proudest experiences of my life. Every order is a reminder that hard work, creativity, and a little bit of courage as a kid can grow into something real.
Balancing this with my full-time career as an IT manager hasn’t been easy — the early mornings, late nights, and weekends in the kitchen instead of relaxing have all been part of the sacrifice. But every time a customer tells us a cookie made their day, it’s worth it. This business represents something bigger than cookies: it’s about teaching Maya that ideas matter, that persistence pays off, and that you can build something meaningful even when you start small.
What Sets Us Apart
Unlike traditional bakeries that stick to classic, expected flavors, Yum Bites is built entirely around originality. We specialize in custom, never-before-seen cookie combinations — flavors you simply can’t find at a regular grocery store or big-name bakery. Customers don’t just order a cookie from us; they get to co-create one, bringing us their wildest flavor ideas and watching us bring them to life.
Every cookie is made with care, tested and refined until it’s something we’re proud to put our name on. And because this business started with a child’s imagination rather than a corporate recipe book, there’s a genuine, personal touch behind every order — something people notice and keep coming back for.
What’s Next
Our next big step is opening a boutique storefront in the Houston, TX area. Right now, Yum Bites operates as a home-based, order-driven business, but we’ve reached a point where demand and community support have shown us it’s time to grow. A physical shop would let us:
Give customers a place to walk in, browse, and pick up fresh custom cookies in person
Expand our flavor offerings and introduce seasonal and limited-edition creations
Build a stronger local presence and connect more directly with the Houston community
Create a dedicated space to keep testing and perfecting new flavor ideas with customers in real time
This next chapter is about turning what started as Maya’s 2nd grade project into a true neighborhood destination — a place where “not your average cookie” isn’t just our slogan, but something people can walk in and experience for themselves.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
While I may run the day-to-day operations now, the real credit for Yum Bites belongs to Maya. This was her idea from the very beginning — her imagination, her flavor combinations, her logo, her vision for what a cookie company could be. And it was her enthusiasm and persistence that pushed me to take it seriously. What could have stayed a school project folder in a drawer became a real business because Maya kept asking, “When are we actually going to sell these?” She’s the reason Yum Bites exists at all, and she remains the heart and inspiration behind everything we create.
None of this would have been possible either without the support of my wife and our family. From testing early cookie batches and giving honest (sometimes brutally honest) feedback, to helping with packaging, orders, and keeping things running smoothly while I juggled a full-time career, their support has been constant. My wife, in particular, has been a steady partner in this journey — encouraging Maya’s creativity, helping manage logistics, and reminding me to keep going on the nights when balancing work and baking felt overwhelming. Yum Bites has truly been a family effort, built on Maya’s vision and carried forward by the people who believed in her from day one.
